It's not unusual to see a new car, camo-covered and mysterious, testing alongside the current-generation model. In fact, it's pretty common. Seeing a brand-new car testing alongside its predecessor from 30 years prior, though, is downright unusual.

maybe a rerelease of the IROC or other submodel of the 80s. or i have also heard the thirdgens are the most aerodynamic of the generations, but this would probably better be tested in a wind tunnel. other than that i cant realy think of any. the t tops idea might make sence if the thirdgen had ttops.

I have heard of a 55 Chevy that the chevy race shop built when the baby LT1 came out. GM slapped a then prototype ZZ3 cam into a L99 265 baby LT1 and put it into a 55 Chevy with a deep rear gear.

Maybe the 3rd gen is closer in weight/size to the G6 than the 5th gen. Easier to work under the hood than a 4th gen, too.

My guess is something less exciting. That being that since it's November in Michigan, chances are that the 3rd gen car has lost it's "summer car" insurance and registration. So it's probably a GM engineer who is simply throwing a Manufacturer's plate on their own personal car and driving it a little longer with some good weather.
When I lived in Canada, my insurance typically ran out in October.

Thirdgens have been used in almost all smallblock, lt-1, ls1 and I would assume new lt1 testing as well.
Been discussed alot, GM guys like them for swapability and its a decent platform to begin with.
If turbo, would assume the TT 3.6 which more than likely will make an appearance in the new Camaro, or it could be doing double duty with a 2.0 turbo setup.
Either one can be made fun, new ATS-V race car is pretty bad.

I'll take the Civilian model! 450hp TTV6, with a 6spd manual?

Wow that's pretty cool to see.
In one of the pics where the bright red RS is backing down the trailer you can see a manual shifter !! I'm assuming that's the car with the intercooled V6 !!! lol
