Best converter for the money

Ok guys I am getting my Th350 gone through right now. I have had two trans burn up in my converter i have now. I figure it is time to get a new one. I was running a 9" 3400 before, unsure of the make but definatley an older conv. Who do you think makes the best converter out there for the money. I dont wanna spend $1000 on one. looking around the $4-500 range.

Also do you think is worth getting my old one rebuilt, and if so who do recommend?

Thanks
Johnny

Transmission Specialties...talk to Fast383 on this board. he gives TGO members a good deal. i have one of his converters in my car, and he's been on board helping me with the technical questions i have whenever i tweak something on the car. his name is Justin.

i just noticed, you live in Warner Robins...i do too! who is/was building your transmissions? whats your combo?

Re: Best converter for the money

Any torque converter can fail. They don't last forever. With a torque converter, you really do get what you pay for and expensive ones can fail just as easily as inexpensive ones. The expensive ones should however take more abuse put to them as they should be built with better components.

A proper converter purchase should be done with an engine dyno sheet in front of you. Since most people don't have that, detailed information about the engine, the vehicle and it's intended use should be known so that the converter can best match the combination of parts used.

Re: Best converter for the money

Hey, thanks for the word Matt. I may have to pay you commision, lol

You should probably post up some details on your motor/car. I had a 383 500HP motor that liked 3200-6500 rpm's. You may have one that likes 4500-7500. That will make a difference as to which converter and stall speed will work best for you. Your cam profile and duration at .050 will determine the desired RPM range.

Another thing that will help you decide is the use of the vehicle. If it's a full street vehicle you may feel comfortable with a 3200 stall and strip only car may like a 4000 stall.

Your budget of $400-500 is going to take alot of the guess work out of which actual converter your gonna get. Usually, that kind of money will get you a 10" (9.5) street/strip unit. We sell our maxed out version for $435. Balloon Plates and all. Stall between 2500-4500 depending on where you want it.

PM me if you want the TGO deal that MW66NOVA speaks of or if you have any specific questions about your options. Or just post em.

Re: Best converter for the money

Ok here are a few specs on the car. I am on my phone so I'm gonna try to make it shorter. The car was planned to be weekend play toy but I enjoy cruising it around. So I think I need to keep it under 3400.

Cam specs

At 50. 244 intake. 252 exhaust.
Valve lift. .52 int. .54 ex

Car is I'm guessing around 3200. Alum rpm heads, hooker super comps, with a 342 gear

Re: Best converter for the money

My opinion would be 3600-3800 at least, you put in a big cam, not a small "cruising" cam

Re: Best converter for the money

I understand it is a big cam. I should have worded it better, the motor was planned to be used on mainly on the strip. But when i got the car together i had alot of fun driving around.

I think i would rather lose a little bit of 60' time and keep it more streetable.

Re: Best converter for the money

my experience has been that you will goof up the innards of a $400 converter long before you'll need balloon plates. im not a converter guy, but i was told the cheaper ones arent welded all that well on the fins. (which is why most of mine got bent backwards)
i guess your torque applied to the track while leaving the line would be a good number to monitor. if its a big number, you need to spend more on your converter. (power adder cars on a big tire, for instance)

Re: Best converter for the money

I spent 200$ on a Jegs 2700-3000 converter because i have used them in the past, but not for long, so i will actually see how it does after beating on it for a while, usually i used them then solde the car or trans it was in. Otherwise, for 200$ they have been great. With the turbo build, i am scared to find out what converter i will REALLY need to hold 650 RWHP.
