Re: 2015 SpeedMu11et updates
picked these up before i couldn't anymore. M/T Pro 5's. my wife and mine's favorite wheel on the market. they discontinued all the "smaller sized" rear wheels. basically anything 15" that was a rear, so right now they only produce the fronts, and the 16x16 double beadlocks. otherwise, they're gone. they're light....really really light can't wait to get the fronts, but that'll have to wait.

Re: 2015 SpeedMu11et updates
We opted to go to an Outlaw Street Car Shootout at Cecil County Dragway on Saturday. It was a great outing. My cousin joined me in the dirtybird (his 87 GTA bracket car) and had a good outing as well. Though he went out first round, he got some great data for the changes we recently made to his car.
I made it past first round, but slept a bit at the tree in second round (.059 to his .019 light) and refused to give up the stripe. I pedaled it a little and still went a 10.26 on a 10.29 dial. This is the fastest pass in summer weather (about 2000-2200' DA...we need a weather station as the GPS based services we rely on normally were not working, so we were kind of guessing.) and only .01 off from my fastest pass ever (which was made in 3700' better air last fall!) looking at the run, the car would have gone a 10.24 had i stayed in it.
a few things to note: i love .500 pro tree also, the pedal stop was a waste as the clutch would not disengage far enough to shift gears well and i missed 3rd gear on my first pass. i pulled the pedal stop bolt out and was left with just the pedal stop boss (the lug nut i welded/frenched into the floor) which seemed to be just enough. the car went 1.47, 1.44, and 2 1.43 60's, and is becoming very repeatable. I'm hoping our outing for Yellow Bullet in the beginning of September is a similar showing, if not better
good air coming in October/November should put this thing into the 9's with ease

Re: 2015 SpeedMu11et updates
a long waited project has begun to take shape this weekend. I had an air pan before that i built probably 8 or more years ago. This pan was used with many combinations and was normally worth about a tenth depending on air conditions and such. the old pan simply would not fit with the new intake and hood combo, so time to make a new. i'll pick up some sheet aluminum from lowes or the like later this week, but figured i'd share the mock up process
racing on the 22nd. want to have this pan with me by then.

finished product looks nice.
how much clearance is there between the top of the drop base and the bottom of the hood?

Do you think it would flow better if the air didn't have to rise up the pan?

Generally for that kind of thing the volume of the chamber that you're drawing air is more important than the shape. You just want a large area of dense, slow moving air.
I'm a little curious how you worked out the shape of the walls of that thing to match the bottom of the hood?

Re: 2015 SpeedMu11et updates
lots of people wonder about that. i used a poster board template. started with them oversized. placed the skeleton with the templates taped on to it on the car. then on and off with the hood several times, peering into the cowl with a flashlight (the windshield makes for a great mirror with the lighting right btw). the end resulting air pan is slightly too large, and the hood is TIGHT in the hood pins with the pan in place, but i like it like this. zero chance of anything moving around and i know 100% the only air going into the engine is from the cowl now.

Re: 2015 SpeedMu11et updates
well, only made 3 passes yesterday. 2 of which were so/so. for whatever reason, whenever we visit Capitol Raceway, i really struggle to get the car to hook up. the results from the air pan are inconclusive. I only made one pass with it, and it felt like it hit a wall at the top of first, so i'm wondering if it caused a lean spike. I will play with it more as the season progresses. probably later this fall if we can get just a test day again. too much going on at an event to be messing with a bunch of changes.
i knocked the tires off 2 out of 3 passes, and couldn't figure out how to dial the car. then i redlit first round anyway. the car hooked out of nowhere and reacted fast and went red. ran a 10.34 @ 133.8 on that pass. 28x10.5S's, new wheels, and a slight gear change to come for next race. i hope the new hides help out with the consistency department, lol!

Re: 2015 SpeedMu11et updates
so a few things happened since my last outing. i got my new tires. they're a 3055S from M/T, which is the 28x10.5 stiff wall. we fitted them with a tube per m/t 's recommendation. these tires measure 28.1" tall static. the 3054ST i pulled off the car are a 28x9, but actually measure at 27.3" tall static. the car seemed pretty happy in the RPM range i was operating in, so i upped the gearing from the 4.57's to a 4.71. i got a set off ebay. they're a new old stock set of AFCO gears i got for under $100 shipped.
I also increased the front ride height by about 3/4". i really need to scale the car so i'm not doing so much eye-balling, but this seems to be working OK for now. i also took the time to reach under the car and give the compression valving the final 2 clicks and the rear shocks are set on full stiff in both directions now.
new wheels are shiney
results? wheelies.
the car finally worked right. it bogged the engine a little bit, but it carried those tires 30' or better. it took a 5500 rpm clutch dump like a champ and begged for more. no new times to report. the DA was about 2200' and the best time of the day was a 10.36 @ 131. i did notice the mph dropped off about 2 mph in similar DA, but i'm thinking the slight gear change and the fact that it didn't spin it's ***** off is where the mph went. overall, i'm pretty dang happy
here's a video showing the rear tire's reaction to the 3 passes i made.
next outing is MIR in 2 weeks. you better believe i'm upping the launch RPM for that race

Good to see you got it working good! I know this comment is a little late, but you'll likely find that most people have similar experiences with Capital's prep. It's really hit or miss, and pretty much always has been (at least as long as I can remember).

Re: 2015 SpeedMu11et updates
i'd been talking to a few of the local guys that go every week. they said up till the Bradshaw's got the track, it was very hit or miss, and lots of shady stuff going on (folks going red when they shouldn't have, timers not working on out-of-towners against home-town favorites, etc), but that's all changed since the bradshaw's got it. i also spoke to my pro-stick guys about it and they all said they like running there, so i definitely think the issue is within the car. i'm not sure if we will go back there this year or not. we go to MIR, Cecil, and VMP for sure.

Re: 2015 SpeedMu11et updates
last weekend we went to the East Coast Stick Shift Nationals at MDIR. The weekend started off showing promise. The air was in the 2000' range and i had clicked off a 10.35, 10.27, and a 10.30, all at 131-132 mph in testing. the 10.35 was at 5500 rpm and the 2nd two passes were at 6000'. 60 was in the 1.41-1.43 range. My folks were there and they streamed the event on MotorManiaTV. My mom managed to get out of the motorhome long enough to take a couple pictures. Here's a good picture of the car on the 10.27 pass.
First round comes up and i put a 10.29 on the window. 6000 rpm 2 step and launch the car. everything was there except the torque arm. yes, the jegster torque arm that i've had for 15 years now finally caved. interestingly enough, even with all the noise, the car was on a decent pass. because the car bit, the torque arm soaked the hit up, and the nose stayed down, i had a season best 60 and career best 1/8 mile, lol. it ran a 1.39 and a 6.544. it made a LOT of noise. i should have gotten out of it, but the taste of a possible round win kept the loud pedal planted. i couldn't find my opponent and lifted, letting him around me where he took the striped by .0103. blah....ok back to the trailer to find out what i broke. i thought it was a pinion gear or something with the noises. nope, folded the torque arm. the noise was the rear u-joint getting out of wack. how i didn't spit the driveshaft out i'll never know. speaks volumes of the guys at PST for building a quality shaft
carnage pics
I have a new arm ordered with PA Racing and hope to get it soon. It is a little longer than this one, probably by 6" or better and will be on it's own dedicated crossmember. i'll have install pics up as soon as i can get it in the car. the hope is to go out one more time before the end of the season, we are shooting for October 31st.

Nice work Matt! Glad to see someone building a stick car instead of going the auto route ... Boring!
I have huge changes in progress myself and plan to stay stick as well.
Curious why you changed it up from the auto? How are you liking the faceplated tranny? Seems to shift very quick.
Will be keeping a close eye on this now that I found it, keep up the great reports!

Re: 2015 SpeedMu11et updates
new torque arm showed up friday! it came in 2 boxes. the box that had the torque arm and hardware in it, then the box that the crossmember tube was shipped in...except the crossmember tube wasn't there turns out UPS lost it somewhere between baltimore and my place. thankfully i was able to track down a local shop that was willing to open the doors up saturday morning and sell me a piece of 1 3/4" tubing to get me going.
new torque arm is 9" longer than the old one. this should really help out a bunch.
and all installed. of course the driveshaft loop was in the way, so i had to redo that too. i'll blow it apart tomorrow for paint. final assembly and angle adjustments this week, then we go racing on the 31st. should be a good time.

Re: 2015 SpeedMu11et updates
Yesterday was a huge success considering it was the first time out with the new torque arm. DA hovered right at sea level. the car did exactly as i hypothesized and really liked the longer IC. The first 2 passes were light. first one was a heavy clutch slip, no 2-step and the car went 1.43 60, and overall felt amazing. 2nd pass i did a 5200 rpm 2-step with a clutch dump. car picked the tires up but bogged and went 1.44. ran it out the back door to a new best at 10.22 @ 134.
3rd pass i knew it was on. upped launch rpm to 6000 and let it rip. i was rewarded with a 1.37 60, and it picked the tires up (barely) on the 1-2 shift. a new best again at 10.03 @ 134.28! SO CLOSE! the next pass we went up and almost put it on the bumper and had an amazing 1.33 60, but i missed 3rd gear.
After the 4th pass, there was an oil down. I took the opportunity to swap the rear tires side to side. it took about an hour to get it cleaned up and by that point the track had cooled down enough that there was no getting it to stick again. all in all, a very good day. i'm still contemplating what i'm going to do to get that last .04 to go 9.99. for now, here some video.
results from the air pan are still inconclusive. i put it on for the last 2 passes, but spun both passes pretty bad, so i'm not sure if it did anything or not. the MPH stayed basically the same with and without it, so it may have been a waste.

Well done. Plenty of nice fall weather to get the 9.x time slip.
I think there's too much science in support of the effectiveness of the pan for it to be a waste. It would undoubtedly be more of a benefit on those hot/humid summer days when the under hood temps start to climb.
Do you data-log? AFR's, IATs,...?

Nice Matt, does it come down soft? My dad was always big on swapping the tires, kind of like rubbing the hair backwards on a dog he would say. Very close, just need a few more back to back runs and you're there.

Re: 2015 SpeedMu11et updates
Year end post! This season was filled with such huge ups and downs but we finished it out really strong. We couldn't have gotten where we are without the help of a few people, and i'd like to give credit where it's due. Mark and Joanne Walter of Motor Mania TV, Jason Smith of PA Racing, Steve Addison of Monster Clutches, Ict Billet, and Jonathan Atkins of Tick Performance for believing in my program. Thank you guys for your support this year! Martin Smallwood of Smallwood Race Development for one killer cam grind, and all the support of my wonderful wife Kristin Walter as well as the wrench help from Chucky Skinner. looking at this picture, i don't think we could have asked for a better set of passes yesterday and Cecil County Dragway had their surface set on kill. To see only .05 movement across the entire day out of a normally aspirated, pump gas, true stick shift car where the clutch is non adjustable and must be used to complete every shift, i'd say that a 9.97 @ 135 is about as on point as you can get.
On top of that, we had our Mu11et Militia fall meet and had a killer time. It is always good to see old friends, and equally as great to meet the new members or members who have never made it out. I hope all had a good time. We will have to organize these meets better so there is more structure. I'd like to have a way to set up grudge matches, do a bracket race, and entertain a quick 8 as well. we will get there as we grow and figure this stuff out. what a great 2015 and here's looking forward to a promising 2016!
Fastest pass of the day looked like this:
R/T: .031
60: 1.365
330: 4.078
1/8: 6.355
MPH: 107.86
1000: 8.316
1/4: 9.974
MPH: 135.55
also won that on a holeshot, against a fox body
I guess i'll need to start a new thread at some point. there will be some necessary updates this winter. as much as i'd like to take the winter off and do nothing, i believe there may be more work now than ever. I am beyond my safety equipment and i must update the cage. a list of things to do over this winter would include:
rewire the car
cut out bar and install 10 pt moly cage
go back to thirdgen dash
update axles and spool (31 splines are twisted)
i'm trading axle housings with a buddy that has wheelie bar brackets installed. i will be obtaining his wheelie bars as well. better safe than sorry.
AFCO shocks all the way around
that's all for now, and is bigger money than i currently have budgeted for the off season, but i will get it figured out as i always have.
