2015 SpeedMu11et updates

Re: 2015 SpeedMu11et updates
That seems a more reasonable launch RPM. Did you mention that you have datalogging capabilities? RPMs after launch would be interesting to see.
The best part of that video? Getting a look (after the 3rd launch) of you banging through the gears once the slo-mo is done. The sound alone is worth the price of admission.
That total weight is very nice.
So is the licence plate.

i actually dislocated a finger trying to get the front end to articulate by pulling up on the fender. when i did that i had a feeling it was going to be too tight, and realized then that they were probably valved more for 1500+ hp radial cars. What does BNC stand for? anyway, they said they can loosen them by 35%. i hope that's enough. if not i'm not sure what the next step will be there, but i'm confident eric at afco will take care of me. rears are definitely doing their job!

Big Nose Compression. its the valving they use for the big hp cars. I had BNC stuff on my 2000 hp 4th gen. Thats what I used for the back shocks on my current build too. When I get closer to being done, I'll get the front struts as well...no need to have the car sit around on 1500 dollar struts LOL

Re: 2015 SpeedMu11et updates
this is definitely just my spin on how several guys in the org i run with do theirs, so it's not really my idea, lol. packaging it wasn't fun. i have to set depth on it so it turns the 2-step off exactly when the clutch engages still. if it turns off too soon then the rpm will skyrocket causing unpredictable traction. if it's too late, it could limit the engine's ability to accelerate causing a bog. i'll be doing that and a slick rotation tonight. front struts made it back from Afco yesterday and they're already installed. they have been revalved and are MUCH looser than before. so...wheelies if the weather holds out, we're running at South Mountain Raceway in Boiling Springs, PA this friday.

Hey Matt, just wondering how the car turned out and if you brought it back out to the track?

Re: 2015 SpeedMu11et updates
I'm glad you asked
The car worked great at South Mountain. The re-valve on the struts is just about on point. car wants to pull the tires about 3" or so at the moment. I'm thinking we may try to get it to wheelie much harder, then back it off. I got a chance to look over the data from last year and this year. last year the car was running 6.67-6.70. this year it ran 6.54-6.55, and the DA was basically the same between the 2 outings. We went into the 3rd round before being put out by a hole-shot victory from my opponent. It was close, less than .002 margin of victory. We both thought I won actually, as I was pretty sure I went around him (he was dialed a slower 6.77). That Saturday I entered the car show at Carlisle. The car got a lot of attention, but did not bring home any trophies. It's not a beauty queen after all so no surprise. I did enter the car into the burnout contest. We had 3 minutes to smoke them up, or until parts failure. I wasn't interested in putting 3 minutes of stress on the car, or risk tearing up anything with a tire failure, etc, so I just did a 20 second burnout. However, it was loud and VERY smokey and was good enough for 2nd place, which gave me a $100 voucher for any SLP product.
This past weekend I was first round fodder again at the Pro Stick race at Mason Dixon Dragway. We only got 1 round of testing and then straight into eliminations. DA floated around 2400'. The car ran excellent, a 10.19 followed by a 10.18, but a big ole red light kept me from advancing. It's been a hard year figuring out the tree, and I have now red lit first round at all 3 pro stick events I have attended. 60's were great though, a 1.40 and a 1.39 in the heat ain't shabby!
I have the next 5 weekends off from racing, but I'll still be very busy. One of my Mu11et Militia members is coming over this weekend for a roll bar install. Next week I'm going to Louisiana for some family stuff. The following weekend I'll be doing some wrench turning on the Dirty Bird (my cousin's GTA). The 4th weekend in July I will be heading to GA to pick up my mom's 84 Firebird and her new 4.8/4l60e drivetrain for install over the fall. Then 1 week break and I'll be going to Colonial Beach Raceway on the first weekend of August. If I can squeeze a test-n-tune day in before then, I will, but it's not looking good, lol!
here are a few pictures from the last 2 weeks.

Nice.
The red lights are problematic though. We had a trouble with the tree last season but it was the opposite of what you're experiencing. A change to a wrinkle wall slick from a stiff side-wall killed our reaction time. It took a while to get it back. Didn't you get new tires this year? Just thinking out loud...

Re: 2015 SpeedMu11et updates
after 5 weeks of no racing, we had several options for this weekend to find some place to race. There was a Pro Stick race at Colonial Beach, which is a little 1/8 mile track in VA. it's about a 3.5 hour haul from us and had us going around DC to get there. Another option was to go to Cecil County Dragway for an Outlaw Street Car Shootout race, where i can run the Pro Dial class (bracket class on a pro tree, love that class). or my last option was to go to Capitol no Friday to test. we opted to go test instead of compete. it was honestly a great time. i am trying to get the car to repeat, which it now does. i also wanted to work on the tree, which i finally found the tree the last run of the night.
I met a buddy from facebook/umtr forums named Tom Friday evening as well, he had a go-pro so we stuck it to the side of the car for some angles i don't normally get. these turned out really cool.
also put the Flip back inside the car and got the camera off my helmet. i'm actually glad we did this. turning the camera on my helmet on was always a distraction.
and a few slo-mo's of the launches as well. i'm pretty happy with how it's working considering the xerox'd time slips, lol!

You still have power windows. That's awesome.

Re: 2015 SpeedMu11et updates
i refuse to give them up, lol. they were SLLLLOOOOOOWWWW before this winter's updates. all i did was clean the wiring up. i didn't touch the motors or the tracks. they're now the fastest thirdgen windows i've ever experienced. i'm guessing i disrupted a poor ground.

The wiggle test is a sophomore subject.
However from the looks of your wiring, you probably would have done well enough. !

Re: 2015 SpeedMu11et updates
What a great weekend. No video this weekend, sorry. For a quick recap of how the weekend went:
Saturday; the car was working really well, and i had tried a couple things to make the reaction times go back to green. I did a front tire pressure adjustment way outside of my normal range (kinda of like, well nothing else has worked so lets do this extreme change) and I was rewarded. I did go out first round yesterday due to a breakout where the car ran a 10.14 on a 10.16 dial, even lifting off the gas, i just simply didn't burn off enough time.
Sunday we double entered in Footbrake and in Pro Stick. I won first round in Footbrake due to a redlight start from my opponent, and was put out 2nd round due to me redlighting (the only redlight in 11 passes this weekend, that's MUCH better than previous outings!). I had won the reaction time award in Pro Stick with a .004 in first round of qualifying, which gave me the bye in first round given we had an odd car count, or lane choice if we had an even car count. also i got a cool $25 (which i had forgotten all about, lol!) Well as luck would have it, we ended up with an even number of cars. I was able to tree my opponent and he never got near me. i dumped and went a 10.16 on a 10.14 dial and took the win. 2nd round was a different story though. I knew the car would pick up as we got into early evening and dialed down to a 10.13. it just wasn't enough. I was a little late on the tree, and even though i drove around my opponent and dumped HARD (burning off 7 mph) i still managed to go .005 under. ah well, such is drag racing. I owe huge thanks to my wife for all the hard work she put in at the track being preggers and all.
We will be skipping MDIR in 2 weeks, but will be bringing all we got to Waynesboro,VA on the first weekend in October!
some pictures from this weekend. When i got there saturday morning one of the faster guys had his car apart. apparently the gf2000 trans he was running had enough. he had the unhappy cluster sitting on trailer deck and i snapped a picture. he was working on getting the mount set up on his spare trans when i rolled by.
getting ready for 1st round of qualifying on saturday.
no big wheelies this year, but it works so good it's hard to be mad at it, lol
Mason Dixon is incredibly pretty. we really enjoy going there.

Re: 2015 SpeedMu11et updates
hatch Quik-Latch update!
Using just the two latches simply wasn't enough, and if you guys remember back to my first race of the season, I had some issues with them not latching in the burnout box. Well I spoke with Quik-latch, and they said it sounds like the internal tolerances opened up (they have a manufacturing spec I won't share, but basically it allows for some lateral movement). Once the tolerances opened up, the retaining ***** would no longer hold onto the stud. We talked about using 2 more in the middle, but packaging a mount for the stud looked like more work than I was interested in getting into (though it may have been less work long term than what I ended up doing, lol!). Quik-Latch offered to replace the 2 beat up latches, so I shipped them out Monday. Here's to hoping they honor their lifetime warranty. I could use them somewhere else on the car, or on some other project (they work great on cabinet doors and stuff too!)
I installed some Aerocatch latches over the last 2 days. These are awesome. This is the 4th set I've installed, but the first set I did in a steel panel. They're big bastards, no matter how you look at it. they require huge holes in the hood, and space underneath just for existence sake. Once installed though, they're the best thing since sliced bread. I have about 4 hours total in the install (a solid 45 mins of that last night was talking to Chucky on the phone about his fuel system for the DirtyBird though, lol!!!)

Re: 2015 SpeedMu11et updates
My facebook group "Mu11et Militia" had a small impromptu meet at a track in Waynesboro, VA yesterday. it ended up being a small meet with just a few of the core members, but was a good time. only 2 cars, mine and 1 other, but about 6 people total showed. This race was the last points race for pro stick for me this year. I intended to make 2 more outings after this as well.
this was a bit of an odd track. very old, which i like a lot. the show was huge. several nostalgia based classes, and a car show. tons of participation. however the track had timing system issues, and from where we parked you had to make a u-turn into the staging lanes. that meant several traffic jams in the pits. also the staging lanes dumped into the track beyond the burnout box, so you had to pull onto track, then back way into the burnout box. the locals had unique ways of getting around too.
first test pass was to be my last pass of the season. everyone was saying the track was sketchy. i let her fly anyway. 1-2 shift came around and it felt like i hit a wall. when the clutch was released the ever familiar gear crunch was heard. i had nuetral positions in every gear so i figured it was a ring/pinion....nope....
what my plans are now have been of popular discussion on social media. i don't know what i'm going to do right this second, but NO an automatic will NOT go back in the car. I will keep the thread posted, but for now i have to get some other projects taken care of around the house. currently the car is sitting on the trailer. i will need to get it off there to help a neighbor next weekend who wants to go buy a thirdgen, so i may ****** the trans out late in the week.
oh well.

Can you say L-E-N-C-O?
The G-Force G-101 4-Speed Transmission also looks pretty sweet.
Check out what the Super Stockers are doing.
By the way, that's gotta hurt but I admire your sticktoitiveness. If had the cajones I'd run a stick too.
Good luck.

Re: 2015 SpeedMu11et updates
the only plan i have come up with for sure is to try to have the trans out of the car by the end of the week. once damage has been assessed, then i can formulate a true plan. if the damage is near as bad as i think it may be, the good parts will be sold and a true race trans will take it's place.
a g101a is at the top of my list.

That trans sounds like a great idea. We have one in both of our Gear Jammer 68 Camaros and they are very strong and quick shifting. It always trips people out when they look in the car and see a H-pattern shifter on the floor and wonder how it can be shifted so fast!

Re: 2015 SpeedMu11et updates
well, it was every bit as bad as i imagined. not sure exactly what started the failure, but i can guess it was probably the cluster busting through the front of the trans.
the inside was a familiar sight
found all the mid plate pieces in the bell
total carnage looks to have been input/4th, 2nd, cluster shaft, and the mid plate. i'm parting out the good pieces, i believe i already have a buyer for it. then will be making the move to a g101a.
in other news, i'm selling t-shirts and hoodies. here's what they will look like. they're $25 shipped for a shirt, $35 shipped for a hoodie. i'm taking pre-orders through next friday (the 15th) if anyone is interested. turn around time should be 4 weeks or less.

Re: 2015 SpeedMu11et updates
talked to G-Force today. we talked about the goals and the constraints. We worked out a deal on a reconditioned/updated GF5R. muthah...truckin...5 SPEED!
it'll be built clutch assisted so as to not worry about the split slider springs trying to pop off if i have to pedal it in any gear other than 5th. pretty pumped about this. for those not sure what the GF5R is, it's loosely based on the Doug Nash. it will be fitted with a vertigate shifter, and will look like this.

Re: 2015 SpeedMu11et updates
The gear ratios recommended by G-Force considering I will be using my diaphragm clutch still look like this:
1st - 3.06
2nd - 2.06
3rd - 1.60
4th - 1.24
5th - 1.00
RPM drop on gear change looks like so:
Of course that calc is only as good as the data being input, and since we can't account for tire growth in this, it gives a max mph of 130 at 7400 rpm, but I've tickled the shift light going through traps before and it traps more like 136 this way. G-Force did have a different gear ratio recommendation if I moved to an adjustable clutch, but only 1st and 2nd were different. If I ever go that way, I will just swap the gearing out.
For comparison's sake, here is the t-56 gearing (1-4 since i don't use OD on the track) I'm moving away from:
1st - 2.66
2nd - 1.78
3rd - 1.30
4th - 1.00
and rpm drops looked like this.
I believe .10 or more will be gained from the better gearing splits and I'm hoping that the 60' will become more repeatable, and maybe it will wheelie a bit more since it won't be spending so much time spinning the tires from the reduced wheel speed, lol
1st - 3.06
2nd - 2.06
3rd - 1.60
4th - 1.24

For comparison's sake, here is the t-56 gearing (1-4 since i don't use OD on the track) I'm moving away from:
1st - 2.66
2nd - 1.78
3rd - 1.30
4th - 1.00
and rpm drops looked like this.
I believe .10 or more will be gained from the better gearing splits and I'm hoping that the 60' will become more repeatable, and maybe it will wheelie a bit more since it won't be spending so much time spinning the tires from the reduced wheel speed, lol

Re: 2015 SpeedMu11et updates
Great news! Cale and Tinzy Aronson of Black Magic Clutches have come on board with the SpeedMu11et's efforts for 2017. This is a paramount step forward as clutch management is a tough concept to wrap your head around, and having folks like Cale and Tinzy on board with our program is huge. I'm looking forward to seeing what sort of gains are to be had. I will need a data logger and that is going to be my very next purchase after the trans is taken care of.
Cale reviewed the combo and sent me these ratios.
3.167
2.200
1.653
1.286
1.000
the rpm drops look like this:
pretty excited. the trans is almost paid for now and i am hoping to take delivery before the end of the year.
As for Monster Clutches, I am still a huge fan boy of Steve's stuff and Steve and I have an amazing relationship still. I intend on using one of his clutches in every street car build I have my hands in. When looking at the nuts and bolts of my program, it makes the most sense to move away from the diaphragm clutch and put a long-style adjustable in for maximum clutch management control.

Re: 2015 SpeedMu11et updates
I have a friend that has had two Monster clutches that failed on the same car (LS1 T56). The first completely destroyed the pads on half the clutch during a single mis-shift. The next one blew up after a few weeks of use and shattered the flywheel housing and came through the floor pan.
No more Monster clutch for him.

Re: 2015 SpeedMu11et updates
Over the last several years I've been working towards this crazy idea that I would compete in drag week. I can't let go of the street car stuff ever. Every time I try to go 100% racecar, I end up wishing I could drive the car on the street still. I truly do love racing the car more than having a quick blast down the block, and setting the car up as a true street car has a lot of disadvantages. These work against the competitiveness with the local racing organizations I'm involved with so it seems it's a constant battle of balance. However, having a drag week car and having a street car are very different things. I will set the car up with drag racing in mind, and street driving will be a secondary priority, though I will need to make sure the car can survive a 12-1500 mile trek in September, in what seems to always be the mid-west where temps can be anything from 30's to 90's.
This year, my parent's company J-Angel Productions (the parent company of MotorManiaTV) provided the stream for Drag Week 2016 on Motor Trend's YouTube channel. The Drag Week stream will remain on that channel, but new for 2017 will be a live stream directly from my car, for the entire week, to the MMTV1 channel on livestream and MotorManiaTV's website.
In addition to the amazing sponsors that have already helped with my efforts, I have some new companies that are coming on board as well. A Cam Motion low lash solid roller will take care of valve action for 2017 and a C&S aerosol carburetor will handle all the fueling demands. This is an exciting time for sure!
The goal is to be a front runner in one of the Small Block N/A classes (whichever one the car fits in the best). Hold on tight, we got more coming soon!

Re: 2015 SpeedMu11et updates
Last night I "went live" on facebook to figure out the mechanics of how that worked. It was a total train wreck, lol! The connection was spotty so the video ended up being super grainy and I didn't write down what I wanted to say so I fumbled all over myself, barely getting out a full thought. I decided to take a secondary video and edited it an put it up on my YouTube channel. Please give me some feedback on this as I need to know where to improve beyond reducing the amount of "ums" in the dialog, lol!
I'm also curious if it would be better to "be live" or to edit the video and present it that way. I'm open for any and all constructive criticism.

Re: 2015 SpeedMu11et updates
my biggest goal right now was to get the car up on stands before the end of the year. i was able to do that today thankfully. i got a few key measurements done and let me tell ya, that vertigate takes up huge amounts of room, lol! as it sits, i think it's going to be really crowding my legs, but i have a few ideas.
also i got a new toy that i'm pretty pumped about. 2" punch and bead die from Eastwood. taking my speed hole game to the next level
that's all for now, but i will be much more diligent now that the car is the only thing in the garage.

Re: 2015 SpeedMu11et updates
got some work done yesterday before the new year rang in honestly, i was really concerned about shifter placement, until i got it in the car that is. ergonomically, i couldn't have asked for better placement. it's close to me, but not so close i'm riding all over it down the road or anything. the bolsters on the seat keep my legs from falling into it.
it did take some cutting, but nothing real major. i'll build a nice removable panel to cover this up.
That's all for now. Happy New Year!
