An odd L69 question
Hey there everybody. Im a absolute L69 freak. I was woundering if anybody knew what the offical record was for the worlds fastest all stock engine L69 f-body is? Or if such a record exsits. The past few months ive been hunting for a cheap L69 t5 project car, after failing to hunt my old one down. Ive been obsessing over the idea of trying to build the worlds fastest stock engine L69 f-body. Modded suspension and slicks exc. Just a stock L69 with a soild suspension set up and lots of traction. Wasnt sure if this had been done or not, tryed a google search and found nothing. Thanks everybody!

Re: An odd L69 question
seems to have been several people wanting to make a fast 305 the last few years. i think if i was going to use a stock l69 engine, i would gut the car, do all the boltons, gear, and some slicks if you want to run a t5. its not going to be very fast, so i dont see a need for exotic parts. probably wont even need any aftermarket suspension stuff since it will hook on the slicks. try running the stock clutch or a slightly more aggressive one but not much. focus on the engine bolt-ons and removing weight.

Re: An odd L69 question
I know the 305 is a limited engine, i just want to see how fast i can get one down the track on the stock L69. Might seem like a weird fetish but im just one of those off the wall kinda guys haha i would run almost full interiour, i dont really get into the gutted look. Was thinking 50/50s 90/10s and a bunch of tubular suspension parts just to lightin up the car and get some more ragidity over the stamped steel crap. Try to maximize weight transfer and get the most out of the traction i already know ill have. I know autos are the way to go as far as consistency goes and winning at the track but im a purist and with some no lift shifting i believe i can put down a faster pass than i could with a auto car. Im still woundering if such a record exsists or not, i would love to have a idea of what a L69 car would put down at track set up correctly. Thanks for the reply.

Re: An odd L69 question
In Stock Eliminator trim which is about the fastest you're going to get with a stock type of engine, a third gen Camaro with a 305/T5 should be able to get into the 12.9 range considering these car probably ran in the 14's straight from the factory.
Factory rating was only 190 HP for the L69. NHRA/IHRA rates a 1985 305 at only 258hp. A 1986 305 is rated at 263.
NHRA/IHRA know what power potential is available from these engines in what they consider stock trim. Some modifications are allowed such as electric water pump, headers, slightly better cam etc.
Once you start changing the engine with better heads or head porting, aftermarket aluminum intake etc, it's not considered stock any more so there is a lot more potential to what the engine can do.

Re: An odd L69 question
i would really hate to see someone put all that time/money into such a limited setup. as a person that has been there/done that, don't waste you time/money. once you start racing im sure you'll get hooked and want to go faster. to each their own. if your that set on a stock L69 record, knock yourself out.

The stock l69 t5 cars ran about a 14.7 stock. You not waisting money in modifing the suspension. You can always pull the l69 out and drop a different engine in. So seeing how fast i could get a stock l69 to go wouldnt nessisarly be a waist of time and money just because of the engine. When no money is being invested in the l69 it self.

Re: An odd L69 question
My '83 L69 all stock except for a cowl hood and K&N filter ran best of 14.96 back in '85. That was with the skinny 15" stock goodyears (lots of wheel spin), an open rear end and T5 tranny. There was with no tuning or adjustments from factory setup. My reaction time wasn't the best either!! I would think that with a proper suspension setup and sticky tires, 14 flat would be very possible and with a good driver, maybe even faster.

My 84 L69 ran a best of 13.62 @ 99.13 MPH...Drag radials, 4:27 gears, 2800 stall converter, Dyno Don headers into 3" Hooker cat back with test pipe. Never had the valve covers off. Had a lot of fun...Then wanted to go faster so now were sporting a 383.

Re: An odd L69 question
i'd bet with time and dedication, fully gutted and attention paid to the clutch and gearing program, that setup would go a 12.99 in stellar air conditions.
the whole "stock engine record" thing seems to be big now with the factory cars running so fast and the internet making things so visible. back in the 80's when these cars were new, it wasn't really a thing. to have a "record", you'd need stipulations on what is allowable, and a pool of people large enough to care about what you're doing to try to chase the record as well. i think working with a limited combo is neato though, so i'm interested to see how fast you take it.
