I need more fuel capacity....legally
So I looked over the site for a while and couldn't find anything on this topic.
The stock fuel tank in my '87 IROC is 15.5gal research suggests. That gives me an approximate range of 350mi @ 14 gallons @ max calculated fuel efficiency. (yes I know i wont get that)
That said the only fuel tank that has a larger capacity that I can find is built by Fuel Safe which holds 24gals and can provide a range of 575miles max efficiency calculated. But costs 3700.00 for an additional 8 gallons-ish!!!!!
If that one exists there's got to be more out there that aren't flying so high in prices. Can anybody direct the right direction.
I want to race the NY-LA run for as a sheer enthusiasts in an American vehicle. Specifically my IROC. I'm looking to make few upgrades that will provide for safety, and give me the best chance I have at completing it as fast as possible. (yes, I know I won't be breaking any records in a 350tpi, though I am going to port the heads, and intake, make some other small mods and retune.)
Thanks for your considerations!

If you modified the rear pan of the car removing the drop out in the back you could add a second tank and still have it outside of the passenger compartment. You will be dealing with weight issues however.
A group of us here have been playing around with the idea of doing the run at some point in the near future & have targeted the Audi Diesels (Q7) as the vehicle of choice. It's a mathematical problem to figure out but an average speed of 112.12 gets you there in 25 hours - shattering the old records and from our calculations and based on some modifications (custom fuel cell & programming) could be done non-stop!

Oh yeah, ive got pages of notes and part numbers as far as a record setting car/build. But this I more want to do as an enthusiast and basically a research run.
Not worried on the weight of an excess of 8 gallons or so on the camaro. The suspension will be built to handle it.
As far as when game day hits. I want to do it in an American car all the way, being as though its an American race.
That said I've been eyeballing the SS 1LE, and Charger Interceptor real hard. With spare fuel tanks in the trucks, the Police Charger would make a very stable very comfortable and reliable car for the run. Expanded radiator, oil cooler and trans cooling, stock speed of 156, tunable to 180 it makes a good candidate. Through on some SRT8 braking and shocks for stability. Spare fuel will add 250lbs, not bad as long as its baffled. You can pull the seats and weld off the truck to separate it from the passenger compartment completely. The police interceptor has a column shifter vice center console, and light rack up front, both perfect for inner equipment mounting in the center police console such as uniden gps police scanners, switch boxes for IR led Light bars, and CB radion mounting. The light bar is perfect for external lighting and flir camera's mounting for any lights out sections of travel. Throw in a blinder M47, and some ambulance IR stobe light for stop light changing and....yeah ill stop there.

No they were less. The most capacity for a third gen was 16.2 on Z28 and IROC models from the 80s. Years ago someone fit a second gen tank into a third gen, they have a capacity of 21 gallons. Something to think about.
