New 350 build, will it hit 12's

So while perusing the net, I began looking for 350 SBC builds and came across this.

http://www.hotrod.com/how-to/engine/...-block-engine/

Its a vortec build. Obviously prices have gone up since it was written (the heads along run $250 more than printed), but how solid does it look and what do you think could be improved? Cost is not the ultimate factor in this build, my goals for the car are. On that note though, if there are combos for more power for the buck, or same power for less money I would be interested to look at them.

I'm looking at building a new 350 from a short block this winter to replace one that I've got that is worn. Its going in a 74 nova with a 4 speed muncie and 3.73 rear. Not looking to break any records, just looking at something that will run great on the street and decent at the track. Maybe even add a small shot of nitrous (50-75).

My goals for the car are low 12's, a high 11 would be great and I'm looking to build it on a working mans budget. Let me know what you think!

440 HP will get you there if the weight is right and you can get it to launch.

Re: New 350 build, will it hit 12's

^ Thats what I figured. I have a 98 TA that dyno'd right at 398 to the wheels that runs 12.9. I figured it would be a close cut with this motor NA and high 12's.

That said, I ran into a deal on a 383 short block with flat pistons today. Buddy has had one laying around for a bit, but decided to go the LS route. I traded him a few LS parts and got me a 383 short block with a set of vortec heads. Now I'm not set on the heads at this point, and would take head and cam recommendations for good streetable power.

Anyone have some proven combos or recommendations?

Not sure what your budget is, but a good set of AFR, Dart....etc heads, performer RPM intake, and then call up your favorite cam company and have them help you select the correct cam for your engine to match your goals.

If you want a bit of extra reading check out here for some more input.

Re: New 350 build, will it hit 12's

My Vortec headed 350 with a XR276HR cam and 10:1 went 12's. Had a 10" converter/700R4, 3.27/3.70 gears, carbed and a poor 2 into 1 exhaust. 60' times were in the 1.7 -1.8 range. At 3700 lbs that works to about 350-375 hp.

Re: New 350 build, will it hit 12's

Havent heard of profiler, I will give them a look for sure. I had planned on snagging some afr, but if I can get similar performance for less money out of another brand I would be up for it. I don't mind saving cash when I can, but heads are important enough I'll spend it

You can call a racing head service like SRH (Speier Racing Head's) or HUH ( High Velocity Heads )... their are several that can give you a better idea as to what will better serve your application.

Your not trying to set the world on fire either so, any of the aforementioned head's will get you there.

Speier did a flow test on the Pro Filer heads. I checked it out as I'm interested in making an upgrade myself.
Check out

Tons of useful info there.
I like the reports on the Pro Filer 195 cc head with the 2.02 intakes.

Don't see why it shouldn't do it. I love the xe274 cam in my 383. I dipped it into the 11.50s last weekend. That's a 3650lbs car with me in it.
