Anyone cut the cowl/firewall?

When I pull the motor I'm looking at possibilities of cutting and cleaning up the cowl/firewall. Car has been a strictly drag car for years and firewall is cleaned off and all holes covered and welded. The part of the cowl where the wiper motor sat is where I'm looking. Have a cowl hood and want to seal all of the gaps and see if there is some weight to be lost there. Any pics?
Also looking at cutting the frt. part of the trans tunnel and fabricating a larger tunnel to clear trans shield and make R&R easier.

Re: Anyone cut the cowl/firewall?

I cut away the top part of my cowl. Don't need it in a drag car however removing that also removes the sealing area for the back of the hood.

Most of my firewall is still original. Lots of modifications done to it though.

My trans tunnel has been cut out but I'm still in the process of fabricating something new to fill the hole.

Re: Anyone cut the cowl/firewall?

I have a lift off cowl hood so there's no sealing it. I do want to make the cowl smooth so it doesn't catch air and try an air pan.
I just R&R'd my trans today, changed converters for this weekend. I really want to cut the trans tunnel! I have a CSR trans shield I'd like to install, it's one of those form fitting ones that covers bellhousing and all.

Not really to clean it up, but to move the motor back.

Re: Anyone cut the cowl/firewall?

I will have to take some additional pics, I have done both.

I hated the way the cowl impedes the access to the distributor, and the trans tunnel to clear the JW Ultra Bell.

Re: Anyone cut the cowl/firewall?

I'm wanting to seal it up like 1BADRZ28 has it sealed to the windshield. i have a cowl hood and trapping the air in that pocket isn't doing any good.
1BADRZ28, I'm wanting to tie the trut supports to the cage. Your tubes appear to be all one piece form the cage to the frame. It looks like they're welded to the strut supports outside of the bearing plates.

Re: Anyone cut the cowl/firewall?

Tvc15, how far back did you move the engine?
From the picture, it looks like 5-6"....just curious, because I'm looking to move mine 8-9" back & 3" down for better weight distribution & lower c.g.
Thanks

Re: Anyone cut the cowl/firewall?

That was a LS conversion, I only moved it 2 inch's. At the time I was afraid to go more because I was was worried about having to move the pedals.
