Drag Racing: Spare wheels and tyre options

Hi all,

After my previous post about my axle tramp / wheel hop issue (which is now sorted) I'm now looking at improving my 60' times. I think I've reached the limits of the street tyres I have fitted to my car and I need to look at a spare set of dedicated tyres for the track.

I'm currently rolling on stock Iroc 16" rims with Nexen 245/50R16 CP tyres. These are 'ok' for road use, but really show their limits on the track, even breaking lose going into third!

So could someone explain to me the largest tyre I could fit? I was looking at 255 or 265 profile tyres, and from there what wheels would I need to get to allow for clearance. I don't want to beat any of the body work or have any rubbing.

I'm looking at buying a pair of Crager D Slot steelies, just to run these on. I'm looking at MT ET SS tyres as an option, but over here in the UK we are limited on sizes and brands!

Thanks in advance!

Re: Drag Racing: Spare wheels and tyre options

probably best to go to a 15" rim as theres more tire sizes available?

a full drag slick will give best traction.

Re: Drag Racing: Spare wheels and tyre options

For track use only, get a pair of 15x8" aluminum rims and a set of slicks. Without knowing a lot more data, best suggestion is some 26x9 slicks. 26x10 would also work but you would be pushing it with an 8" wide rim. There's no reason to run a DOT or radial tire unless your track prohibits slicks for the class you run in. If so then you use a DOT slick. They're the same as a full slick but have the small rain grooves in the rubber to get a DOT rating.

Slick width is measured across the tread. a 9" wide slick is 9" wide. A DOT tire width is measured across the section. A 10.5" DOT tire will probably be less than 9" of tread.
