How much boost?

Hey guys just a guesstimate. how much boost do you think i could run on a 355 with 8.6 to 1 compresson and be safe? like with not blowin the motor apart?

im askin becuz im trading my 468 bbc for a 355 sbc. its got a edelbrock intake, 8.6 to 1 compresson, all new bearings, im sure all OEM internal pieces , rv/towing cam, and i think stock heads. motor was out ofa 79 pick up 3/4 4x4, owner said it could smoke the tires with out a problem.

im also saving right now for the BBSdesign single turbo kit, and tryin to find a good fmic that will suppoert 700 hp with no problem.

also all ofthis will be on a carb enless i can find everthing to convert to EFI for cheap and yet not cluter the engine bay.

If you run aluminum heads, you could get away with up to 22 psi on pump gas. If you're just gonna run it around on the street, 10 - 15 psi would be perfectly safe with a good tune.

First off...why in the hell are trading a 468 big block for a little 355???

Second, if you run 10-15 pounds on that motor with a nice big single turbo and stock heads from a 79 4X4, be prepared to change head gaskets on a weekly basis.

And third, if you need to ask "how much boost" a stock 350 can take, then you probably shouldn't be building a turbo car just yet. Buy a book by Corky Bell called "Maximum Boost" and read it cover to cover at least 3 times. Not trying to sound like an ***, just speaking from experience. The key thing to remember is that yeah, a stock motor could probably hold up to a few kamakazee 600HP dyno pulls or quarter mile passes, but do you really want to spend money on a time bomb?? Build it right and set realistic goals first.

well im trading the 468 bbc for the 355 mainly since the bbc is bare block right now. the 355 is ready to go just needs my carb and distributor. and with the plans i have theres no way id be able to do what i wanted to with the bbc.

the reason i asked was mainly to get an idea how much boosti could run on the street safely with out blow anything to pieces.

the motor im gettin has 1000 miles on it. im more then likly goin to slap some alum,in heads on there since i already knew that those are better for boosted applications. like im not 100% whats all inside this motor. but i also dont want ot tear it apart just like my bbc and find theres nothing wrong with it. well on the bbc the rings didnt seat right. but that sat since oct.

i mean i could do a complete rebuild on this motor and it wont cost as much as a complete rebuild on the bbc. id be goin all fordge parts. i know i should change the cam to some thing that will go good with a turbo or blower.

well screw any ideas or plans that i started in this post. the guy that was goin to trade with me backed out becuz the bbc was goin to weigh like 200 lbs more in the front. and with what he wanted to do to his car it wasnt goin to work.

i hate this now i dont know what to do and dont know if i really want the bbc any more or even workin on my car anymore

dude, just build a nice stout n/a bbc, you will have more torque than you know what to do with, trust me. you can easily have 500/500 without spending all of your pennies and have something streetable, and truely unique.

hang in there dood. you might be able to make a better deal for trading that bbc. years ago i was trying to sell my truck so i could get a thirdgen. people would call and say they were gonna show up and never did. i almost pulled the add out of the paper, but i got a lot of encouragement to keep it in a little while longer. good thing too, b/c this guy needed a 4x4 more than his z28, so we made an even trade. the point is you can always find another buyer

If you want a power adder thats not n2o, then be prepared to shell out $$$$. Otherwise keep the 468 and add to it..like one of the above posters said.. 500/500 is easy n/a w/a BBC.

well i also have a n2o set up thats been sittin in my room for about 3 yrs. but ive decided on what im goin to do. im boostin the 305 and then when im finished with the 305 where i can run it and not have a problem, then ill just leave he 305 at that.

and after i get the turbo kit and everything for the 305 and bolted on and runni nand tuned, then ill start buildin the 468 unitl someone comes along and offers me a trade. but if there ends up being no trade then ill build my own headers for the 468 and turbo that and either sell the 350 and turbo set up or save it and wait for anotehr car ot come along.
