You can actually see it in Post #2 pictures. I ended up spacing it away from the head 1/2" also. Ill snap a pic later tonight. I think you can still see it with everything bolted on.

Also made some more progress on wiring last night. Getting so close!

Re: Project Déjà vu- 87 Z28 5.3L Turbo

Here is a picture of the bracket. Kinda hard to tell since its all pretty tight in there. Basically the part that is bolted to the head is also bolted to the back side of the t4 flange, then I bolted a piece on the front and then welded it to the part that bolts to the head for extra support. My intentions were to weld a piece from the front section on a angle to the mounting location on the head but space became limited.

Hope it helps!

Jay

Also should add I got a bunch of wiring done for my gauges. Im glad I spend $100 in wiring and havnt used it yet. I have enough spare LS harnesses that I had enough wire to run all my gauges with a different colour lol.

Any updates so far? Was the trans builder able to find a full spline shaft? Also, did you tie in the downpipe into the catback yet?

Re: Project Déjà vu- 87 Z28 5.3L Turbo

Some progress. Not as much as I would like, really once I get the trans in and the fuse block done its the home stretch.

-Battery Cables- Done
-Trans lines- Done (just need the trans in to cut to length)
-Fascia is back on, horns are in.
-Engine harness wiring is basically done and hooked up (need to finish the fuse/relay panel, which my friend ordered all the parts, just need to go grab them)
-Flexplate is on

Probably a few other small things. Basically just been chipping away and hour here and there. I will be getting the trans Saturday I think. he did get a Full spline output shaft and he had to replace the carrier bearing if I recall. Said it was mushroomed. Glad I went with the rebuild.

Nice to see that you are making good progress!

For me, where you are currently at is the most gratifying part of the project. Things just seem to fall into place, with relatively little effort yielding nice results. Also the fact that most of the big ticket items have already been acquired is really nice.

I am curious as to how you are running your trans cooler lines. I have been looking at mine and I am tempted to re-route mine inside of the frame rail to clean things up. The oval shaped opening for access to the idler arm bolts would make a nice exit from the frame rails to get to the cooler.

Re: Project Déjà vu- 87 Z28 5.3L Turbo

Well the way I currently have them is ran beside the oil pan, then along the Kmember up to the frame rail, tucked them behind the idler bracket and squeezed them between the rad and rad cradle. Only thing I dont like is all the hot piping there. I may look into some heat sleeve to be safe. To stay away from the heat I could always follow the front of the pan and flip my cooler around and have the in/out on the drivers side but I dont think I have enought braided line for that.

Re: Project Déjà vu- 87 Z28 5.3L Turbo

I understand your concern as yours is a little more busy in that area than mine. The last thing that we want happening is a leak being sprung in that area.

Mine was set up kind of like how you described except that it doesn't run over from the k member to the frame rail, it goes straight forward and I drilled holes in the lower radiator support to pass the hoses up through. It worked out pretty well except that it is squeezed in pretty tight between the center link and the k member. I didn't like seeing it from under the hood though and it is kind of a low hanging fruit between the k member and the radiator support.

That reminds me, I need to get a couple automotive fire extinguishers on order to have in reach from here on now that the exhaust temps will easily exceed the flash point of the trans fluid and engine oil.

Re: Project Déjà vu- 87 Z28 5.3L Turbo

Well some update pics just becuase its been too long lol. I also think I promised a pic with the fascia on to show the intercooler a while back.

Last night I shortened the starter wires. Cant recall how they ran on the car stock but I had to cut them like 1 foot shorter lol. Either way starter is in and wiring is done. Car even cranks

I ran the fuel pump wiring under the carpet and made/ran the wiring from the alt to the fuse panel for the fuel pump(s). Im wiring the car for twin pumps and twin fans since I know I will eventually upgrade both.

Somehow all that took 2 hours LOL. Oh well trans comes back tomorrow and I will have my PS cooler (stock ls1) and the fuse clips. Which i will work on first. Im hoping to get out in the garage next wednesday or so since we are supposed to get a couple warm days, that way I can paint the trans tunnel and trans mount.

Well wiring is ALMOST DONE! Hoping to check everything over this week, finish the last small bit of wiring and fire it this or next weekend. Make sure everything checks out good. (oil pressure etc) then toss the trans in and get a drive shaft and finish up the last bits of the puzzle like upper rad hose,PS cooler lines etc.

Nice progress, the car is looking mean with the intercooler behind the grill!

Initially I thought your trans cooler was a AC condenser. The thing is massive! Do you know how many BTU it is rated at?

Also, do you have any pictures of how low the intercooler is? If you have a picture with the intercooler with the tow hook tabs or lower radiator support for a reference I would appreciate it. I am still not sure if I want to stand it up or angle it in on the bottom.

Also, have you made any decisions on the boost controller front?

Re: Project Déjà vu- 87 Z28 5.3L Turbo

Its a Flex-a-lite 4120 20,000GVW Cooler. It was pretty cheap, keeping budget in mind I figured it would do the trick.

I will try to remember to grab some pics. It pretty well sits level with the lower rad support I think. Its definitely higher than the fascia lip/chin.

I think im going to extend all the wires for the solenoid and mount it bascially right next to the gates. Keep all the hoses nice and short.

Nice build man. The more I read about turbos on this site....the more I think about doing one....some day.... I grew up around heavy diesel trucks and equipment and love the tune they whistle. A friend just put twin turbos on his cummins. one is variable vanes... thing has close to 900hp. yep, made my mind up. going to build one. (someday) again, great build Jay. (nice to see good welds too!) keep the pics and updates coming!!

Re: Project Déjà vu- 87 Z28 5.3L Turbo

Thanks man appreciate it! Turbo whistle is such an addicting sound. I know back when i did my first 383 turbo in 2008 or so IIRC, I saw a couple videos of some turbo SBC's and was like thats it, im doing that! Knew NOTHING about turbo's. Was a big/fun learning curve.

And another UPDATE!

The PCM fuse/relay panel is done. Was a major PITA to fit all those 10awg wires int he panel. If I ever redo it or change anything I will just buy a small 8 gang fuse panel and seperate relays for fuel/fans and mount them elsewhere. I wanted the all in one clean setup but its a PITA lol. Oh well its done with for now. I turned the key and tested ignition 12v on all the keyed stuff (trans/coils/o2's/sensors/pcm etc) I have yet to test the fan or fuel pump relays.

OBD Port is wired and ready to mount as well.

I also got the trans painted and clear coated. Was a tad disappointing the builder didnt paint it. He said when he was at that stage he couldnt find my number (since I called his home not cell) and didnt know if I wanted silver/black/hammertone etc. Not a huge deal since I had paint in the cabinet anyways.

Next few nights are looking pretty busy, maybe saturday after family leaves Ill get some more work done. Would love to fire the car this weekend, but im not gonna rush it.

Re: Project Déjà vu- 87 Z28 5.3L Turbo

Snuck in another hour or so last night. Trans tunnel is painted and the gauges are basically ready to pop in and connect the signal/highbeam wires (already wire tapped them).

There is one thing im not a huge fan of with the speedhuts. All the signal wires are built into the gauges. So I have like 3 or 4 wires the same colour (yellow/green stripes). So I matched the wire colour from factory, tapped into them then hung those wires down. At least then if I need to trouble shoot anything Ill have an idea of what wire is what.

Gauges are all wired up. Ill have to get my real camera out to get a picture. The maxi-display is so bright that my phone cant get a picture of the display lol. Sad how I have a $2000 camera but use my phone for everything! lol

With the holidays I may not get too much time to work on the car, probably have a date night with the wife the only day I have free. A bit overdue since we had the baby.

Im pretty sure by next week/weekend I will be firing the car and if all is well I will be tossing in the trans then having my buddy come out and weld up the charge piping.

Sweet build man, I was following your first one. I'm also doing a LSX/4l80e turbo car but using the lil tc78. I really need to update my build on here but don't even have enough time to work on the car. But anyways, very sweet car.

The maxi gauges came out great! A lot of good information packaged in there and it is displayed quite nicely. Where did you position the egt sensor?

Re: Project Déjà vu- 87 Z28 5.3L Turbo

Thanks guys. Did a tad more work last night, fuel pump is all re-wired with 12awg in tank and with a fuel safe 4 to 1 heat shrink. I realized when I was soldering the fuel pump connection i used a smaller gauge wire. Figured do it now before the car runs and I never change it lol.

Also Pulled the tune from the PCM. So far all is good! I do have a fuel leak at the rails. I had to make brackets to hold the rail and they arnt seating perfect. Actually tapped them with a mallet this morning and they popped into place. So I gotta take a look at those.

For the EGT I drilled the boss on the manifolds for the heat shield. Tapped it 1/8npt and put the probe right there. So its literally 1" away from #7 exhaust port. Figure I'll watch the cylinder that gives people the most grief

Re: Project Déjà vu- 87 Z28 5.3L Turbo

Messed with the rails last night a tad and still had a huge leak. Said screw it and ordered some Holley Rails. So hopefully Ill have them in by the weekend and fire the car. For the most part I have the tune set for a base fire. Whipped up a custom OS 3 bar tune in EFI live last night. So far it seems to be checking out. All the sensors are responding and I got the EFIsource 3 bar map pretty well dead on with what the stock 1 bar read with the pcm on engine off.

What rails do you have that are leaking? The last thing you want is a fire. I have picked up some automotive fire extinguishers just in case for this very reason.

I am also using the EFI source 3 bar map sensor. Did the suggested 305 linear/ 10.33 offset settings match up well to the stock sensor at atmosphere with KOEO?

Re: Project Déjà vu- 87 Z28 5.3L Turbo

I got some Edlebrock ones off a buddy meant for a Vic Jr. I machined them at work with M4 tapped holes on the bottom to mount to a bracket. But dummy me decided to rush to get the intake on before making the brackets so when I made the brackets I was leaning over the car that was jacked up. So i dont think I was getting them at the proper angle. Figured Ill just replace them with Holley ones I know fit proper. If I had more time I would mess with them but I just wanna get it fired. Spring is a pretty busy season around here with having a pool and a massive yard/lanscaping.

Surprisingly I put in the offset that the tutorial has and it works good. Stock I was getting 99KPA, then I swapped it for the 3 bar. Checked again to insure it would get a different number which it did around 39KPA, then I loaded the 3bar tune and it was getting 100KPA. Im sure I could tweak it a tad more to get it at 99KPA.

C6301- Map Sensor Scaler = 288.0078
C6302 Map Sensor Offset = 10

Once I get it fired I can email ya a base tune if you want. As you know stock 5.3L, Z06 cam, 4l80e, 3bar and 80lb injectors.

Currently what I have done to the tune besides the tutorial is....

Left it Closed loop (so skipped page 17 stuff) Im also refering to my old 370 tune which still has STFT and closed loop enabled
Started with a stock 2002 5.3L tune
Copied all Z06 VE and timing Maps (z06 cam, im sure it will be a tad fat)
Copied in the 4l80e Segmant (currently stock)
Turned off all the emissions/egr/secondary o2's/vats etc
Changed it to Single Fan output
Changed to a 25.8" tire and 3.23 Gear

In the custom OS I made the 105+Kpa VE (adding 4% fuel every column) The tutorial says to copy the last 105kpa column then copy it to the last 285kpa and add 300% which is super rich. Doing tuning my friend has doung adding 3% seems to work. So I added 4 for saftey.
Also made the timing in boost retard. Started at pulling 2* in boost up to around 14* retard at 15psi then 20* retard passed 16psi for safety.

Re: Project Déjà vu- 87 Z28 5.3L Turbo

Which tutorial are you referring to? I will definitely have keep my old sensor around for comparison sake. I am using HP tuners so the tune wouldn't be of much help.

Unfortunately because I decided to upgrade the cam from the LS9 cam, I will have to do some work to the tune besides setting it up for 3 bar, changing injector constant for the deka 80's and adjust for the MAP sensor.

I would imagine yours will be pretty close being you are using the fueling from a LS6 tune, like you said, maybe a bit fat due to less cubes, although that should be factored in when the computer calculates the injector pulse width needed.

Maybe I didn't see it, did you end up putting the narrow band sensors in your cross over?

Ahhh Well that isnt much help! EFIlive has a tutorial for thre 2/3bar OS. HPT you should be set SO many people willing to give out tunes for HPT.

Yup I have them basically right after the manifold.

Re: Project Déjà vu- 87 Z28 5.3L Turbo

Holley EFI Rails are ON! Everything seems good. Primed the system like 10 times (since it bleeds down) and everything seems good! Ill know once I fire it I suppose.

I should be able to fire it today or tomorrow if I get some garage time. All I need to do is yank the turbo oil feed and pressurize some oil in it (prime the motor) then reconnect the oil feed and fire it!

Hopefully within the week I report back with good news LOL

I think that may be next years plan for me. Send it off and have it painted Arctic White. I will get some video once the cold side and trans is in. Still a decent amount of work done but its looking like mid may the car "should" be DONE. Well for now.

Left to do...

Install trans
Mount PCM
Connect DP to midpipe
Make Wastegate dump tubes (not too worried about this right away anyways)
Cold Side (friend is tigging)
Install Hood
Toss some fluids in

Re: Project Déjà vu- 87 Z28 5.3L Turbo

Its alive!

Fired it yesterday and it kept stumbling. Last try we bumped up the desired airflow for the IAC and I got it to run for around 20 seconds before it stumbled. Im sure its has to do with the 80lb injectors.

I tossed a new tune in this morning pulling around 4% out of the VE Table so later on when I get home Ill test when I get home. Its Surprisingly really loud with just the 3 feet of downpipe.

So looks like I can start making some bigger progress. Trans will be in this week, Ill probably order my driveshaft then work on the trans linkage for the stock shifter and odds and ends. Hopefully my buddy can come by this or next weekend and weld up the cold side. He is also to LS tuning guru for our ground of friends so Ill have him look over everything ton ensure I didnt miss anything.

Glad to hear you got it running. What tuning software are you using, HPTuner or EFI Live? I missed that part, sorry about that Jay_rich. Anyway it sounds like you need to do some Base idle air tuning, but I would wait until you get the tranny hook up because the load will be different even at idle.

I have some good news too. My block will be here this Friday and then I can start putting everything back together; it was on back order so it had to ship from Summit Racing's Nevada store to Ga. I have everything I need to re-assemble the beast even a set of Howard Billet main caps. So as soon as I get the block off the UPS truck I'll take it to the machine shop to have the mains installed and line bored/honed.

Re: Project Déjà vu- 87 Z28 5.3L Turbo

ya I keep getting directed towards that. I think the injectors need to be tuned in a tad more too. I find it surprising the way it wants to die on tip in with a pretty well stock motor. I may mess around a tad more but once the trans is in im gonna have to mess some more! Looking like it may be a rainy day here so maybe I can get out there after the baby goes down to get the trans in.

My converter bolts wont be in until Wednesday now. ordered a set of 4l80e ones when i was gonna use the stock flexplate and now they are too short lol.

Awesome! Ill be watching for updates!

Good to hear that you got it running! That is a significant change considering you have a totally new engine/trans configuration now. I am quite envious with the progress that you have made recently and in general. You will be on the ground rolling before long!

I hope you have the car jacked up high and friend or a good jack with large pedestal, or a transmission jack preferably. I had a fun time wrestling mine back in there after the swapping the converter, I really have no idea how I did it with the stock converter being that it weighed 25lbs more than my 258mm single disc unit.

Just curious here, do you have a close up of your egt probe on the car? I will be tapping the #7 cylinder manifold port like you did and I want to see what the clearances are like when installed. I plan on using the factory heat shield, so I will have to tap a different spot, or modify the shield.

Chris

Re: Project Déjà vu- 87 Z28 5.3L Turbo

Im hoping mid may to see the road. Sooner would be better but I have some yard projects going on. Gonna have to bust my ***!

I put it in by myself last time. Its a giant pita. First time it slid off the jack and pinned my arm down under the shift linkage. Amazed it didnt break skin lol. I kinda have an idea of how to get it in now with jack positioning. If I get garage time tonight it will be going in. I can make some BIG progress once its in. (exhaust, cold side and linkage is all waiting on that) Exhaust is #1 right now since its pretty damn loud in my garage. I wouldnt mind shooting the fumes OUT of the garage lol

I will try to snap a pic when I get home. Basically just took the bolt out, drilled it all the way though (go slow since it breaks on an angle inside) Then I took my small dremel to open up the inside so the probe would slide in good. I think I set it like 1/8 to 1/4" in the manifold.

Re: Project Déjà vu- 87 Z28 5.3L Turbo

well tossed in a tune with a few more degrees timing in the lower sections and pulled a tad of fuel. Couldnt get more than an initial fire then stall. Getting pretty tempted just to get a mail order for a base since I dont really have the time for all these test fires lol. Get a VERY small window of when i can fire the car since im only home for a couple hours before my baby is in bed.

Anyways here is a pic of where I put my EGT on #7

Jay, can you even pedal it to keep it alive? what injectors are you running? Assuming that all of you sensors are connected and ensuring that you have all of the injector data needed in your tune in addition to the MAP sensor details there should be nothing preventing you from starting. Idle airflow is also likely in need of adjustment, but you should be able to pedal it to keep it running.

Re: Project Déjà vu- 87 Z28 5.3L Turbo

it would pretty well die when pedaling it. I did get it to rev clean once then die. if I get a chance tonight im gonna toss all the injector values back to stock. Just scale the Flow rates and test again. All the sensors seem to be reading like they should.

I did noticed on the efi live tutorial it didnt mention anything about setting one of the maf codes to 1. C2906 (Maf low frequencey fail limit) I left it set at 6. So the PCM may be searching for a maf and looking for those tables.

Oops my bad I wasnt even thinking yes the probe is on #5....dumbass! lol. For some reason i thought I put it in #7. I think i had intentions on putting it on #7 to be honest and probably wasnt paying much attention lol. In my defense it was -15*c in my garage when I did that lol. God drink another one LOL

Re: Project Déjà vu- 87 Z28 5.3L Turbo

Well upon going over some things yesterday i noticed I had a vacuum line unplugged.....lol. I have all my wastegate/boost controller stuff ready to go and grabbed the wrong line and plugged it into the SCG-1 Map sensor. So the one that was suppose to go to the map sensor and BOV were just sitting there. Hopefully that was the issue lol. I also got a tune from my buddies 370 LS Turbo Camaro. Went through it changed a few things and loaded it in. So crossing my fingers when I get home that it fires!

I have the trans sitting on the jack ready to go and I re-routed all my trans lines through the frame rail like Chris said he did. Now I dont have to worry about heat and how to secure them!

I also filled the block and rad with coolant and filled the power steering pump. So if I get some time tonight Im gonna thrash pretty hard and try to get the trans up and in, front belt drive all buttoned up and get the drive shaft measured. Luckily Bear Automotive is like 3 shops down from my work. So that will be a simple stop for the driveshaft.

You are making some serious headway! Do you thing the EGT probe would clear the steering shaft if you did put it in the #7 cylinder?

Re: Project Déjà vu- 87 Z28 5.3L Turbo

I can take another look tonight. I cant believe this entire time I didnt even look and say hey idiot thats #5 lol.

So I posted my tune on the EFIlive forums and someone found a mistake. The tutorial shows to set a couple perimeters to 100 (max). So it puts them out of range and I think the PCM doesnt read them. Apparently you are suppose to set them in range like 99 then SAVE the file, close it open and set it to 100. And they should stay in range. I guess its a quirk depending on Operating systems etc. Did a quick search and MANY people had that mess up. They should probably explain that in the guide lol.

So Im gonna try fixing that in my old tune and trying it again. If not Ill try my friends tune. Only thing I find weird is I used VE's from a 2002 Z06 since I have a Z06 Cam. For some reason they are pretty rich. Dont know if its compensating for injectors etc. It was richer than my buddies 370 turbo VE. So needless to say I may just start fresh with 5.3L maps.

Re: Project Déjà vu- 87 Z28 5.3L Turbo

Things happen, at least you have a EGT!

Kind of odd with needed to do that to get the parameters just right in EFI live. Are these the settings needed to get the car to fault the MAF and run SD?

I would think that if all of the injector parameters are truly correct and you have the cylinder volume set for the 5.3 vs the 5.7 that the VE should be pretty close. You may throw the factory injectors in (if you have them) and load the factory injectors settings that would be a good way to check out this theory. What injectors are you running now?

Re: Project Déjà vu- 87 Z28 5.3L Turbo

All the Maf stuff is shut off just those 2 scales are out of range which is an easy fix. Basically whats it does is a value of 0 makes the PCM use the low octane timing, 50 makes it use a mixture of both low and high and 100 makes it use only high octane. With it out of range it may no know what to use it my guess. When i was logging it I was seeing correct cranking timing. Maybe when it fires it get confused. Thats my theory lol

I wish I had some factory EV1 injectors but I dont. Believe me I have debated this lol.

Issue with injector tuning is no-one with EFI live wants to share there info on it. Seems like more tuning shops use efilive than DIY kinda guys. Most seem to have HPT and have no problem sharing their settings! I know I have the flow rate correct its the pulse width which confuses me. There really isnt a tutorial or an explanation on injectors

I know when i turn the key on my car logging Injector bank 1 and 2 it shows I think the default pulse width of like 3.939 or something, then when I start cranking its logging upwards to 11.xxx MS pulse width. Im not sure if bank 1 means all 4 or?

I could share the information I have (meant for HPT) if that would help. Not sure if you could read it using the demo version of HPT downloaded from the website though since it is 3 bar.

In HPT there are the normal tables like the flow rate vs manifold pressure 0-80 kPa, injector offset vs voltage, and minimum pulse width. Additionally HPT has a tab labeled "Transient" (some feel this needs relabeled) with several additional tables and scalars like "Short Pulse Limit" and "Short Pulse Adder" that people have tweaked to get the PCM to command pulse widths as low as 1.3-1.2 ms, which is needed on injectors this large and engines this small.

Well talking with my buddy today he was wondering if the fuel pump is even working when the car is fired then I remembered something. Obviously havnt put the trans in yet so I havnt hooked up the neutral safety wire. I wonder if this isnt hooked up if the PCM doesnt supply fuel when cranking? Im thinking thats the case and the car is basically just firing on the fuel thats in the rail? Thats a quick fix/test when I get home at least.

FINALLY!!!!! Well I must have missed something in myu scratch tune. Took my buddies 3 bar tune, scaled the injectors, VE and changed a couple things like fans, rev limiter etc. Engine fired right up! A tad rich but Ill work on that after the car is out of the garage or at least has exhaust. Im hoping to get out there later tonight and get the trans up and in. Thanks for all the suggestions!
