Rear mount turbo. Tpi
So Im currently building an 82 z28 into a turbo tpi car. I have a l98 tpi long lock in the car with carbed intake. I also have a 89 I believe tpi without cold start etc. I'll be using megasquirt to run it. I'm going remote mount because I already have the parts. I'm removing all the oil system. Pump turbo. Etc from my 01 Silverado 5.3 that I had rear mount turboed. It's a fun truck but the weight makes it a little slow. I've seen pictures before of this done to a third gen. Just looking for more. Or advice if you've done it. I have everything basically planned out aside from the charge pipe routing and the actual turbo mounting. Considering the major opening under the passenger rear muffler spot. I may turn it sideways and run open downpipe straight out. Just gathering ideas.

Do it kinda like the STS systems for the 4th gen F bodies.

Re: Rear mount turbo. Tpi
The fourth gen has slightly more room under it and also due to the body. It doesn't sit as low back there. My car already is lowered and need to keep my chances low of something hitting it. I wanna see actual third gen pics because I KNOW people have done it. Lol

Re: Rear mount turbo. Tpi
I am putting a 4th gen gas tank and rear in car currently. Mine is a 305 tpi car all stock. Running new replacement 2.25" exhaust to rear and putting an On3 T70 there. Looking for 330-350 whp if i can.
Eventually want to rebuild motor, mild cam, refresh heads maybe vortecs, and some kind of intake either hsr or single plane efi like i have in my other car. Or ported tpi with slp runner if i canfind some under 300$. We'll see

Re: Rear mount turbo. Tpi
I was planning on coming out of compressor into an intercooler mounted under trunk next to turbo and then running down driver side. But now i may look at a cooler up in the nose of the car. We shall see. It will be hot air low boost setup initially

Mine is gonna run no more than 5psi on a good day till I finish the 383 bottom end. Then I'll be running 15 psi with watermeth injection and possibly e85. Until then I gotta get the turbo plumbed and what not

Re: Rear mount turbo. Tpi
I was thinking the same thing with the A2A IC in the rear on a planned 4th gen car. Sort of going back and fourth with the A2A or just going A2W IC in the rear. You running the check valve in the inlet oil line or doing the outlet sump? I plan on doing a small sump with no check valves at all using 1/4" feed line and 3/8" return line from the oil pump.

and a few more...
I've thought about this forever now... Boosting that is...
The Original poster said he was gonna run MegaSquirt but...
Can you run a 165 ECM 6E MAF mask or do you gotta switch to 749 ECM $58
I'm a little scared to switch over
Not Hijacking just confirming for the rest of us

I'm not a fan of factory computers. I like standalone setups. Seeing as I feel it's a little easier. I've tuned my truck with hptuners. And really wish Ida went standalone. There's so much factory crap to do away with. I spent more time tweaking that then actual tables.

Re: Rear mount turbo. Tpi
Without check valves, the oil feed will drain into the turbo when the engine is off. The drain may do the same depending on the location.
Check valves can stop this from occurring, or a small sump can be installed on the return side under the turbo to catch the fluid from the lines instead of overflowing the center section and leaking into the compressor and turbine.

Re: Rear mount turbo. Tpi
Mine doesn't do that either and I have a 90 at the bottom of the turbo. So there's no where for the oil to drain without the pump. And I've yet to see it build up and leak. I've put 1000s of miles on it so far. I'm getting other things sorted before I get this turbo on. Gotta finish up a few other things first.

Re: Rear mount turbo. Tpi
Your front mounts have drain line under them before the pump. That is your reservoir. Short distances are fine.
amount of oil in a line = ((LINE_ID/2)^2)*3.14 * LINE_LENGTH * 16.38 mL.
Suppose rear mount with 4/16" line with 3/16" ID that is 15 feet to turbo. That is 6.7mL. Not much, but if the remote pump is higher than the turbo then that line is back draining toward the turbo too.

Re: Rear mount turbo. Tpi
Sump doesn't have to hold much at all. Just a little piece of 1" pipe is plenty big enough.
I am running 1/4" feed and 3/8" return for low press and high press sides. Only about 10mL of oil to sump.

Re: Rear mount turbo. Tpi
You would have to have it so high that it develops enough head to back feed the turbo drain port. There really isnt much oil in the drain lines when the turbowerx pump is going, atleast from what i've seen.
I may run a few inches of dead vertical off the drain but planned on a few runs of horizontal line depending where pump ends up being mounted

Re: Rear mount turbo. Tpi
In my experience I feel no need to have any oil left in the turbo removed unless it was serious inlet feed. Me and a guy were talking that if all the oil drained or was pumped out after shutoff. During startup you would have a short time that the turbo would spin and have no oil to the bearings. This is minuscule amount of time but it's a thought to ponder on.

Calc the time to fill a 15 foot 1/4" diameter line. The volume is 7mL. By comparison, that is about 1/4 of the size of a standard wiskey shot.

My inlet is 6an though as well as my return line being 6an all the way back.

Yes it's restricted. Even though without it. I never had oil issues. Just needed and adaptor for a 90. So I bought a restrictive plate.

Re: Rear mount turbo. Tpi
Not really for the third gen. I swapped over to some vortec heads and Intake for now so should be close to 400hp crank. As for the turbo well it managed to get put back on my Silverado build and then to top it. I bought an 03 wrx to play with
