6.0L LQ4 S475 Build - '86 Iroc-Z

Decided to transfer this over to a new thread rather than tacking it onto my old thread t4 hotside build thread (https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/ltx-lsx/631665-turbo-lq4-build-new.html)

Its been a few years since I have posted any updates so I'll get everyone back up to speed. A few changes I have made with the car is the switch to e85 (including 1000cc injectors and a magnafuel 750 pump) and I added to my roll bar to make it a 10 point cage. Besides that, just tons of street miles and the occasional trip to the drag strip.

New fastest pass with the car was a 9.44 @147.9, this is on e85 and 20-22psi from the CXRacing gt45 80mm. Id say that turbo is tapped out at this point and didn't really pick up as much power after 18-20psi. I should also mention I am still running the same engine that I started with back in 2011, at this point this poor 6.0L has to have 100 track passes and 25k hard miles. I'm anxious to see how much is left in it!!

So that brings us to today.... the obvious next step is a t6 turbo. I picked up a Chinese knock off s475 (96mm turbine 1.32 a/r) with only some dyno time on it for 300 bucks so it will be perfect to get the car swapped over to a t6 setup and then make it super simple to bolt on any s400 turbo later on.

I'm starting completely from scratch on the hotside. The old t4 hotside that i built at the very beginning of this thread has held up surprisingly well over the years (besides a few cracks) but I have just out grown it. The plan now is to use down and forward truck manifolds (cut down and v banded of course) and do a true divided setup to try and get this turbo to spool within a reasonable amount of time.

So I'm just barely getting started and have only mounted the turbo so far using a 1/4" brace off the head but I wanted to post up early so you guys can follow along.

Quick fender video of the 9.44 pass

Re: 6.0L LQ4 S475 Build - 86 Camaro

Hope you guys like pictures!

The 2.25" vbands came in the mail yesterday so I was able to get started on the manifolds last night.

I borrowed a speedway ps/alt bracket from a friend for mock up. It will allow the driver side truck manifold to point down and forward. This was a requirement for me because I want the spark plugs to be super easy to change and I want to move the coils back to the valve covers and run factory plug wires. With my previous setup the coils were below the manifolds and the manifolds all but blocked access to the spark plugs so it was a huge PITA to change plugs. Basically required removing the manifolds. So wont be making that mistake again!!!

A few cuts in the band saw, a little baking in the garage oven (to try and avoid any issues with the cast) and a friend manning the TIG welder.... and Voila! we got ourselves a set of down and forward turbo manifolds!
The driver side comes out right under the heat line outlets on the water pump and the passenger side comes out by the steering shaft underneath the alternator.

Also a few pics of the Lil John Motorsports S400 4" outlet flange as I promised. This was only about 50 bucks including the clamp and well worth the money. Real nice piece!

Also my 2.25" mild steel "Pro builder kit" showed up this afternoon from mandrelbends.com. All the bends look great and should be more than enough to complete the exhaust up to the turbo. And at a price of about 70 bucks, you cant beat it!

Since I was placing an order at mandrelbends.com anyways, I have always been curious to get a box of their "Clearance/B-stock" bends. If you have not heard of this, its basically a box of random pieces that are flawed that they cant sell. But rather than scrapping them they sell them by the pound! They come in and out of stock depending on what sizes they are currently bending. The only size I saw that seemed interesting to me this time was the 3.5" mild steel so I got the 25 pound box for $25!!! And boy was I surprised when they showed up. There a just very small flaws in each piece, a dent here or there, one piece the die grabbed the pipe and put a tiny mark in it, one u bend looked like it got bent a little more than 180 degree. In my book these are a smoking deal if they happen to have the size you need, I would highly recommend giving it a shot. I wont be using any 3.5" for this project but I'll have lots of good stuff for the future.
Ill add a few pics of these tonight.

With any luck I'll get some free time tonight or tomorrow night to start knocking out the rest of the hotside. More to come!

Re: 6.0L LQ4 S475 Build - 86 Camaro

Ive had the last week off work so had lots of time to get most of the hot side finished up. I built a true divided 2.25" setup with two 44mm wastegates. Overall I'm very satisfied with the overall fit and packaging compared to my old t4 setup.

Here are the pics. I started at the flange and worked my way back to the manifolds and added a flex section in each side for heat expansion.

And a few more pics of the wastegates in place and the start of reconnecting the exhaust to the previous downpipe

I just heated them to 300F. I saw a few people that recommended that temp on an ls1tech thread. in the past we have just heated them lightly with a torch but i have a garage oven now so figured we might as well try that.

Great build! My mani's have been holding up going on the third season no no issues. I just heated mine with a map torch, mig welded about 1", cooled in sand and repeat. No issues!

I did a set for a friend about 5 years ago and they are still holding up great. Hoping I have the same luck here!

Yep, it has a dump out the fender with a cutout. It can also go out a 3in pipe to the back with the cutout closed. There is no cutout installed in these recent pics but if you follow the link at the very top to my old build thread there are some good pics in there of building the fender exit.

Looks like you had to do a fair amount of massaging to the fender well to fit that s475 in there. Im looking at putting a s480 im the same location. Really wishing i had fabbed it all up before i stripped and painted the engine bay.. smh. Lol
