Opening Fabrication/Powder Coat Shop (Spring)
Hey yall,
Opening a fabrication and powder coat shop. I have been wanting to go for a while.
Most of it will be turbo fabrication. I was a fabricator/tech at a diesel business. Have much experience with turbocharged applications. Also we will be be powder coating our own products in house.
Turbo kits will range from basic mild steel and exhaust manifolds to full blown tubular stainless. I alredy make a nice kit for LS Vortec trucks thst keep all emmision equipment
Have 2 running examples now. both over 500rwhp on stock longblocks. Been getting some demand for them on truck forums.
Also will offer LS swaps for any vehicles. I currently make accessory drive parts for LS motors made from billet 6061 material,CNC made.
Will offer many other services also.
Just throwing it out there for fellow TGO folks. Fair pricing and quick turnarounf.
Still in process of getting all of my equipment together. Will be openimg soon since i alredy have some work lined up.
My shop car is a 1991 Camaro with 410ci LS motor, TH400, Moser 12bolt and a **** load of boost

Re: Opening Fabrication/Powder Coat Shop (Spring)
swaps are more of a case by case basis. currently ive performed a total of 10 swaps. 3 in 3rd gens.
so im pretty familiar with obstacles.
i can provide engine and transmissions, harness etc.
depends what customer is interested in having built.
basic swap 5.3 or tt 408, etc. priced accordingly. but based on labor hour rates
some fabrication is set prices.
also looking to bring in a guy that builds race type transmissions. he is interested in coming back home to houston. so may offer that as well if goes as planned.

Re: Opening Fabrication/Powder Coat Shop (Spring)
the coated parts have to sit in a oven for a period of time. after receiving the coat of powder. its basically very fine plastic powder. some are more coarse than others if they have metallic or texture in them.
cant really say if they will hold up if they dont get baked.
ive been baking em all and the demand just got too high for me to keep doing it at home.
i am putting together my 6x6x6 oven and a smaller one for smaller parts.
was coating all the cold side parts and flanges my uncle uses in his business.
to have correct results, the part coated needs to sit in an oven for a while.
you can actually do it home w a diy kit. but still need an electric oven to finish part.
got the bigger oven so i can do wheels and other big parts.

Re: Opening Fabrication/Powder Coat Shop (Spring)
Sounds like you will have some good stuff going on over at your shop. I would like to stop by and check out your operation once you are up and running.
BTW, I noticed your '91 has a TH400?
I have a TH400 in my '82 and am considering either a T56 or possibly a 4L80E.
One of my concerns is that I would prefer to keep my carbon fiber drive shaft if possible. Do you know the relative drive shaft requirements for these transmissions?
Thanks,

sure thing man. shop is welcome to any fellow tgo members. im alredy used to 12+ hr workdays. so im gonna b open later hours and saturdays. maybe have an open shop day a sunday every now and then.
im getting alot of interest from my ls1tech folk. been working on tech members rides and selln stuff on there for years. with a good strong rep.
i have chart i got off some site w most of the gm rwd trans. but i couldnt tell u off the top of my head. i gotta go look it up.
im gonna have to cut my old th350 shaft and replace the yoke for th400 shaft.
but i can see how u would want to keep the cf shaft. not as easy to just take to local ds shop to have modded.
since im using 1.5+ setback mounts w the ls motor in my car. around the headers im using and no way any factory trans xmember fits. im gonna have to make a "drop" type tubular one on my car that ties into the sfc i also have to make. also looking into making a cross bar mount point for the tq arm instead of tunnel mount.
with the th350 i was able use the b&m trans mount bracket and stock tq arm.

Re: Opening Fabrication/Powder Coat Shop (Spring)
any one in houston area looking to get a basic turbo set on there car?
im looking to develop a basic easy to install turbo kit for sbc 3rd gens. basic means essentials. i wont install at my place any ebay turbo, wastegates or bov. only thing i use from ebay are a/a fmic.
but i can build around those size turbos and wg.
im in the process of becoming a turbonetics and hks dealer. gonna use them because of the warranties and proven performance. plus its my fave brand of turbos and i know for a fact they work.
basic means vband mild steel hot side. mild steel cold side w silicone couplers and tbolt clamps. a/a fmic. oil feed/return lines for single turbo. 3in mild steel downpipe w 02 bung
keeps a/c. need to replace factory overflow w smaller one. few other misc. mods needed but nothing invasive.
ive alredy done a turbo ls 3rd gen. but thats different because of the mounts used. too many motor mounts used. none are the same like on a sbc car. whole nother deal.
of course would b to lowered price to a member who is interested. would need to keep the car in the shop to get it started and finished asap.
i dont like cars and parts sitting around. lol

Blow-through huh?
What do you think it would take to build a blow through setup with my 900cfm Pro-Jection TBI?
What parts would be needed?

Re: Opening Fabrication/Powder Coat Shop (Spring)
Disclaimer, yes I know this is off subject If 3rd gen F-bodies but since we're on the subject of a local speed/fab shop and in the good sport of hot rodding and looking for more power....
I have something to bench race with y'all and maybe get a rough estimate on what it would cost. I just picked up a 4wd Kia... Yes I said Kia. :-D Sportage. I haven't done any serious off-roading in a few years other than my 4wheeler so this is a quick cheap way back into my original hobby.
It has a puny little 2.0 that is basically a larger CI Miata engine. I'm not sure if I'll even bother with registering and street driving it but good fuel mileage and a smoother ride than my truck make it likely if I don't completely destroy it.
Either way, on or off-road, guarantee I'm going to want/need more power eventually and I think a turbo would be the thing to do. Feel free to give me other ideas for it.
So after all that long-winded crap, what could I expect throwing a turbo at the four inline squirrels to cost vs what kind of power output coul expected? & no, I won't be doing a V8 swap anytime soon, this is meant to stay CHEEEEEAP, lightweight and not break anything.

Re: Opening Fabrication/Powder Coat Shop (Spring)
Either way, I would probably also install the Mega Squirt I built. It has a feature to allow for the use of dissimilar injectors in stages. It also has a neat feature that will blend in some NO2 while you are waiting for the boost to build.
I think I have the fuel pump situation pretty well in hand with dual, inline Walbro 255's. Right now, the second is on a window switch so that it won't overwhelm my puny return line at idle.

You can get an Eaton blower, good for about 6-8 psi, starting at $2500.
If it were me, I would probably get the Eaton because it is so easy to install, or go plumb it for wet port injection NO2.

Re: Opening Fabrication/Powder Coat Shop (Spring)
Cool, I really want my next on road toy to be a Miata (even though I barely fit!) It would become a death-rocket with some kind of LS-nastiness. :-D
If you trust wiki: Mazda FE
I definitely wouldn't be spending that kind of money on it. I only paid $600 for the thing. I was thinking some kind of cheapo parts & self fab as much as possible with guidance and a little help from a pro as needed. You know if any good ways to squeeze more power out of that engine cheaply for now?
& last thing. The transmission had broke and only has 4th gear. I pulled it out this morning and next I'm either going to tear into it, take it to a trans shop or just junkyard source a new one. Any pointers to what it could be or how hard to fix? The lady said it lurched ahead while driving, then would only go into 4th & she parked it. It will actually shift through the pattern but only engages 4th but acts like it has no synchro.
I'm only asking here because I trust y'all as gearheads vs people on Kia forum I have been searching the last couple days. They seem at their limits beyond bolt ons & maintenance. (makes sence because what car enthusiast desires a Kia... Something is wrong with me. :-D )
If you trust wiki:
The rest of the world received the FE-DOHC in the 1995–2003 Kia Sportage, built by Kia under license. Kia first introduced the engine in March 1992, when they installed it in the Kia Concord, a license built version of the 1982 Mazda Capella. The Sportage variant was reconfigured for rear-wheel drive configuration with long single-runner intake manifold, low-duration cams and exclusively in the low compression ratio of 9.2:1.

Re: Opening Fabrication/Powder Coat Shop (Spring)
bronco,
imo i would use a totota ct26 turbo. internally wastegated. turbo that will make some hp. very common and cheap. easy to find. they came off celicas/supra and other toyota cars.
ive used one back in the day on a 95 5spd v6 camaro. used a 10:1 fmu. some old 36lb. injectors i got from jy from a sc bonneville. it ran good for about a week on stock tune. and then i started messing w the wgs and it went boom. lol
i did have a inline pump i got from jegs also. didnt even have a boost gage.
if u wanted to stay cheap. get one of those turbos. they are tiny so they fit anywhere.
alot of rebuild parts and upgrades for them.
and use a fmu and also plumb a sprayer strait into the turbo compressor inlet. w a hobbs switch. w a pure meth or 50/50 mix. will add a source of fuel under boost. run colder plugs. start w less psi. and run on stock tune if there is no way to tune it. the stock tune should b able to handle some boost w a fmu and also if u spray the compressor. read plugs and maybe get a wideband if it allows. the fmu will work and add fuel under boost.
but gotta remember its just an aid but in no wau meant to replace a real tune.
also, sprayin pre compressor w save using a ic.

Re: Opening Fabrication/Powder Coat Shop (Spring)
The Mega-Squirt can do almost anything. But I'll have to make a new wiring harness to go with it.
I would probably need to rebuild my bottom end also. 11.2:1 probably isn't the best starting point for adding boost and my 253/260 duration cam wouldn't be so good either.

I need to just find a spare fox and play with a junkyard turbo setup. But....my S10 extended cab build might be more fun with a rear mount turbo....and a t56. Just because no one would expect it.

Good luck on your venture. I am out of Thirdgens for now but bought an LS6 2004 CTS-V with 14000 miles on it. Have been having fun with that.

hey thanks al!
ive installed a procharger kit, h/c/i lt headers on a 05 v. clutch n hydraulics. love those cars. guy I put together for got it tuned by a guy in atx and then sold it to a guy in mx.
have fun w it.
so far so good. finishing up a lq9 swap in a 69 convertible c3 corvette.
also got a 68 convertible firebird lined up. same owner.
made a 4l80e fit in a c3 convertible vette. engine and trans look lime it came stock. made the long tube headers off a 98-02 fbody work.
also doing single kit on a 5th gen. after tg.
planning on getting a NOS station at the start of the the year for those who like danger to manifold

Re: Opening Fabrication/Powder Coat Shop (Spring)
what would it cost to drop my IROC off and get an LS swap complete to A/C and power steering? Alternatively, do you do work on the TPI's? if I keep the TPI i'd like to do a mild heads/cam, headers and exhaust.

Re: Opening Fabrication/Powder Coat Shop (Spring)
Been used to fire up and get another 3rd gen swap tuned. Less than 100 miles. Fit good.
Was going to use on my own personal 91 rs ls swap at one point. Then i wanted twins.
And now im looking at a c6 z06. So the 3rd gen is the project that has to get cut from the team.
Nothing wrong w em. Have no collector triangles. I can install vbands or triangle flanges on them.

Re: Opening Fabrication/Powder Coat Shop (Spring)
I was looking at getting a set of the LS swap longtubes and replacing the mess that is under my car at the moment. What size primaries and collectors? How much were you thinking? I'm less concerned about there not being v-band clamps or triangles on them.

What is the name of your shop?
What parts do you still have available? I'm collecting for my 89 GTA LS swap.

I live just south of HOU in League City, might be interested in the headers and mounts.
