Two Star Smog checks in two years

So I purchased my gta last year in October, I got it star smogged within a week and registered. So now my registration renewal papers came in and what do you know? they want me to Star Smog it again, I thought that smog is being done once every two years. California really wants our cars off the road. I know my car will pass, but just don't want to pay for smog every year when other cars only do it every 2 years. Did anyone had that happen before?

You must have bought it mid year
in between the 2 year period.

Re: Two Star Smog checks in two years

So I stopped by the dmv, was told that i was chosen for second check because my car almost failed last time (was running on 7 cylinders due to a disconnected spark plug, but it still passed). So now if your car almost fails smog check you might get selected to take it again. Its like taking a college course and passing with C- and then you have to retake it because you almost failed.

"was told that i was chosen for second check because my car almost failed last time"

What a crock of BS! ALMOST FAILED.....Like almost not stopping at a stop sign, almost got that great 7 figure job last year....and on and on.

I lived out there for 24 years. My pollution control devices, along with my catalytic converter are probably still sitting at the Californina/Arizona border along I-40 when I threw them out the window 8 years ago.

I was ALMOST gonna keep them.

Just Friday humor. I really didn't!

m16a2r....good luck!

Re: Two Star Smog checks in two years

I have brand new converter on the vehicle, new plugs, wires, o2 sensor etc. It will pass cleaner than any stupid prius. Will take the test again and will post results, but I bet I will get another star smog notice to retake it since it runs so clean now lol.

Re: Two Star Smog checks in two years

Cant believe everything DMV tells ya.Could be as Don said.Smog cert is good for 90 days after purchase/change of owners. If smog was due this year & you had bought the car less than 90 days from renewal, you'd be ok, but since your purchased the vehicle more than 90 days from registration renewal.Another smog test is required.

Last 3-4 smog test, my car barely passed by one or two points (mostly on HCs), but ive never received renewals w/ consecutive smog test.

Re: Two Star Smog checks in two years

So I took my star smog test, car passed great. Hope they will not bother me for at least 2 years, or they will make me retake it since it passed so clean.

Re: Two Star Smog checks in two years

The two year smog test was established when the car was first manufactured and sold in Cal. when new. Since your car is a 1988 model you will be tested every even numbered year on the anniversary of its first sold date. Your previous test was because you bought the car and were required to have a smog test prior to sale. The previous owner should have been required to provide the smog certificate prior to sale, but often that becomes the responsibility of the new owner when you buy from a private owner.

The statement you received from the dmv was just something thrown out in ignorance.

JUST TO CLARIFY, CVC DMV Smog test good for 90 days from the date of the test. So new buyer must show veh passed smog whithin 90 days, when he submits docs to DMV.
