10 bolt rear advice

'89 Iroc with an apparent bad ring and pinion in the rear diff according to previous owner. my question is is this something worth trying to fix this or should I just replace it with a spare rear end?

Anyone have a 10 bolt for sale or know a local shop that rebuilds them for a reasonable price? every shop ive called wants over a grand. I messaged Dyno Don a few days ago but no response yet.

Your 89 is equiped with a 9 bolt rear if its disc brakes.

Re: 10 bolt rear advice

Is it a throttle body injection? That would be drum brakes. Or a 305 TPI automatic would have drum brakes and 2.73 gears, too.

If you want to upgrade to disc brakes and better gears, a whole rear end swap would be your best bet.

Re: 10 bolt rear advice

It's TPI. 2.73 rear drum posi..

I do not plan to keep the car long.. so keeping costs to a minimum is ideal. The most efficient way to do it would be to find an exact replacement.. just don't know how realistic that will be.

Re: 10 bolt rear advice

Getting a "new" rear from a salvage yard will likely be your cheapest solution. Typically a car isn't scrapped because the rear went out... so it should be useable.

Otherwise, buy new gears ($200), bearings, gaskets, misc parts ($200), and labor to install ($200-$300) makes for a $600-$700 ballpark. YMMV.

Re: 10 bolt rear advice

if your gonna get rid of the car, look on your local craiglist or shop around. should be able to find a used one very cheap.

have you pulled the cover to see whats exactly wrong with your current rear?

Re: 10 bolt rear advice

Pulling a complete rear out of another car will be your best bet drum rears out here in cali can be had for under 200.
