Strut inserts

Does anyone here have any experience with strut inserts? I've found a few race struts that only come as inserts and was wondering if it's possibly to use our stock strut housings for them. Are there any vendors or shops that offer a service to install inserts? I don't know very much about them or how they are installed and they seem like a resonably priced option to other custom made struts.

Re: Strut inserts

To my knowledge, nobody makes a third gen strut that uses an insert. The insert style is more for a McPherson strut style. Basically a factory coil over.

Re: Strut inserts

Do you happen to know the diameter of the inserts?

The spindle brackets are just welded to a very normal looking strut body. Perhaps you could just weld the bracket onto an insert?

Re: Strut inserts

Strut inserts are designed to fit inside the body. The simplicity is that you don't need to remove the strut to replace the insert. they simply install in through the top. That also means you need to redesign the third gen style to fasten the insert at the bottom. The insert is basically a replaceable shock inside a strut body.

Although it's probably possible to redesign and fabricate something to use an insert style strut but the cost would be very high. If it practical to do, I'm sure someone would have already marketed something for the third gen since strut inserts have been around for a long time.

Re: Strut inserts

I don't know how I never replied to this, but The reason behind this is that I want to use a Koni 8610 or 8611 insert with a much shorter body and stroke. All the available struts for our cars are too tall for my ride height. Currently I have 1" raised strut mounts with additional 1" spacers to barely get me acceptable strut travel before bottoming out. The problem is that they can still bottom out and it's also really limiting my max negative camber potential. It'd make more sense to be able to have a sleeve so I can replace inserts rather than needing to go through the trouble of having to shorten struts. Drop spindles are a last resort for me because I don't trust racecrafts design with how the pin is mounted.

Re: Strut inserts

DSE has a hole insert, AND the whole bracket is threaded onto the strut for adjustability. But they leave you with no adjustability of your wallet!

Re: Strut inserts

I also just noticed that Ground Control has started offering a custom strut insert set up.
