At home alignment tools

Looking at getting some alignment tools so I can do caster/camber/toe for my firebird. I'm looking at the SPC tool with the toe adapter. Alittle over $200 which iS a deal when u think how many times it can be used. I pay about $100-125 per alignment and no one can really take me bc of how low my car is.

What do you guys use or like? the magnetic bubble ones are cheaper but don't do toe in and out. Plus I like how this one attaches to the rim, i currently have 17" rims but might be going with 19" down the line.

Here is the SPC tool at summit.

Rim attachment gauges for a 3rd gen are a PITA. The first time you try and knock at strut mount into adjustment the setup will fall right off the rim. Better using the magnetic type.

With that said, I have both types. I have a longacre magnetic that I use at the track for quick adjustments, and I have the top of the line Digital Rim attachment gauge from Longaxre which is much more accurate when time is on my side doing a complete chassis baseline.

Longacre single person angled/magnetic Toe Plates are nice also and well worth the extra 30 or so dollars over the straight plate setups.

As for bump. I do not use any fancy smancy jig. I simply get a few people to stand on the bumper of what ever car I am adjusting and I see where the toe travels to with about 1-2" travel.

Good point about them falling off the rim didn't even think about that.

How would you attach the magnetic type to an aluminun rim? Only place magnetic are the wheel studs or lug nuts... can't get it through the rims to the rotor.

Im not building a race car so accuracy and frequent changes won't be a large concern. Just need something to set alignment to spec and might only get touched/changed for drag time which won't happen often.

Part numbers help! Lol

Re: At home alignment tools

I have someone hold the gauge when I am aligning their 3rd gen so it does not fall off. The other units are only good for steel wheels because they need to clip on the center hub area.

If you have a helper, then buy the unit you have listed. That is a decent unit. What happens on mine when I forget to hang on to it when banging a strut mount into place, the unit falls off the wheel and the digital unit will fall out of calibration. Its a fairly quick thing to recalibrate it, but it gets to be a pain in the butt when in a hurry.

If you look my Caster/Camber gauge, you will see the center digital unit slides out of the red housing. To re-calibrate it I pull this out and set it on fairly level ground, Press the calibration button until it reads L1, then I set in the same exact spot only 180* turned and hit the button again until it reads L2. That calibrates it. Then slide it back in and continue.
