5th gen IRS into 3:rd gen Camaro

Hi there
I´ve been wanting to put some kind of IRS into my LS2 T56 swapped IROC for 16 years now, but since this is just such a epic task, it has not been done for me..
I´ve seen a few C4 IRS swaps online, and I´ve been considering a similar sap myself. BUT lets face it, the C4 IRS is anything but modern in its design these days.
Art Morrisson has released their freaky expensive multi link IRS about a year ago, but at something like 14000 USD its just out of the question. Every magazine review I´ve seen on it are great, everybody thinks its perfect for just about anything.
So I have been thinking more and more about the 5:th ten Camaro multilink rear axle assembly. I can be bought for cheap, and has good potential to be both strong and handle well.

Have anyone seen or heard of anybody that tried this so far? I´ve been trying to find measurement etc for it, but haven't found much yet. flange to flange, shock mounts etc etc

Anything is possible with enough time, money and fabrication skills but don't expect any sort of swap like that to be cheap or easy by the time it's finished.

Don't judge a project based off magazine articles. They're good for ideas but so many details about what really needs to be done are left out.

I think an 04-06 GTO IRS would be easier to adapt to a thirdgen compared to one out of a 5thgen Camaro.

Re: 5th gen IRS into 3:rd gen Camaro

I too have been wanting this same thing. I would like to retain my rear seats and not have ANY sort of roll bar inside the car as everyone does with the C4 IRS. I was actually just thinking a couple nights ago about a 5th gen Camaro IRS because it has rear seats and might be the correct width.

The Goat IRS is also a very good thought. Really hard to know for sure without having all 3 vehicles on a rack for a few hours to take measurements and examine the possibilities.

Yeah I´d like to find something thats near or narrower in width so that I could keep my c5 magnesium wheels. I´ve been looking at E36 M3 rear axles too. People run 9 second 1/4 mile in turbo beemers here in Sweden on stock M3 axles. Really strong unit that have only 6 attachment points. 4 to the floor and 2 trailing arms. Ive been trying to find one on a floor to take measurements from, but no luck so far..

I wouldn't use it. Parts are expensive, it's just a Borg Warner 9 bolt with IRS and the best upgrade for it, is the 9" kit from Gforce1320..

Btw I have. 2004 GTO

Considering the GTO is based off the Australian Holden Monaro platform, it would make sense to use the BW 9 bolt.

I remember seeing the clay mockup of the new GTO years before it went into production. You could look at it and say "That looks like a GTO" Once the production model was produced, it looks like every other cookie cutter car on the street.

Now if they could every bring the Holden UTE to North American, I'd probably buy one.

You can actually can the Holden SS Ute in the USA. There is a company in Colorado that builds them for you with stock parts. You just need to drop of a Pontiac G8 of some sort and they order everything else that is needed from Australia and bold one for you. Kind of cool. Yeah the Pontiac Sports truck was production ready, really sucks that Pontiac died before it made production

Re: 5th gen IRS into 3:rd gen Camaro

I came across this the other day.... I wonder what it would take to get a third gen kit... or to at least retrofit one of these into a third gen...

I could never figure out for sure. I cant even figure out what the diameter is of the GTO/Monaro diff ring gear. If it was 7.75 we could say it might be interchangable... but Im thinking they're not since they use different part numbers.

Re: 5th gen IRS into 3:rd gen Camaro

Yeah you see that Heidts rear end is not that bad I guess, but not early as good as the Art Morrisson one. They both have one big set back though. They are expensive like crazy. Imagine if there were some kind of adapters for 5:th gen rear ends or some good M5 or M3 axles. They can be found on lie for 1000-2000USD in great condition, and are super reliable stuff and parts for them are easily available

Re: 5th gen IRS into 3:rd gen Camaro

Robbie, looking at the 5th gen rear, honestly there is no reason to think that you couldn't make it work. It would take some real fabrication skills, but, and this is just a guess since I haven't seen the rear sitting under a third gen yet, but it might actually be easier to mount than the C4 rear, since you have 4 distinct mounting points (and then 2 mount points for the shocks of course) but the rest of the suspension mounts to the frame of the rear, so its just a matter of making all fit and finding a way to connect it to the subframe of the third gen.

Really its just going to take someone buying one, and diving in.

Don't let difficulty dissuade you, if its something you want to do, if you've got some fab skills, try it out, you can count on this community to help you all we can (and of course some of us will criticize too, ignore them).

Good luck.

P.S. If you don't do it, I might.

Re: 5th gen IRS into 3:rd gen Camaro

I love the idea of an IRS from a 5th Gen, or GTO in the back of the Third Gen. I've been kicking the idea around myself.
