rear coilover kit

rear coilover kit
Would a rear coilover kit and conventional setup in the front work well for autox/road racing? Im kind of afraid of doing a front kit, cause I hear how it can damage the strut towers. Has anyone done this?
Thanks

Re: rear coilover kit
Dont need the rear kit either. The factory spring setup style works and fits better than the coilovers do in the rear.

Re: rear coilover kit
Im in the process of fabbing my own coil over system for my 87 formula. Basically the front is a spohn kit without their caster/camber plates, but using J&M hot part caster camber plates. got some custom coil spring isolators made for the top strut to center everything in the hot part caster/camber plates. I then ordered another set of steel 1/4" reinforcement plates from spohn and I'm sandwiching the OEM strut tower with the 2 plates (spohn kit only as plate on the underside). I then welded tabes on the support plate in the engine bay to accept a custom STB that I made to connect the 2 coil overs together and to the firewall for max strength. I had fully welded the strut towers a few years ago. I Going with 300lb front springs.
The rear is a spohn kit with single adjustable QA1 shocks, 150lb rear springs. I like the coil overs as I want to customize my ride height without guessing and cutting springs. I also think it has other advantages as well. I had a weight jack setup in the rear and couldn't get it low enough, but I had a 200lb spring so it was stiff. Front was cut moog 5664s (i think… the stiffest OEM spring) with like 1 coil or something removed for a good drop but like over 900lb rate. I wanted a softer ride as car is being driven longer distances to shows and such. Plus I paid less than full price for both kits.
Plenty of people have the coil over kits on 3rd gens… OEM strut towers etc and don't have any issues. Only issue is you loose some adjustment on the front struts.
