Strut Boot

Old shield is gone. New boot I got from AdvanceAuto part does fit, but fully squeezed it stops the shaft around 2.5" length remaining. Means shaft can not travel all the way as 'squeezed boot' stops the cylinder body. Even if it goes in with force ( say a pot hole bump) it will definitely hit the rubber boot hard.

Should boot be such where shaft can travel the full length. I am still searching for a boot that has at least 3" inside diameter so strut body can travel without any obstruction as shaft moves up & down.

Any such boot exist, or do I need to go Homedepot and make protective cover?

Re: Strut Boot

Not sure what boot you got, but i got some cheap accordion like boots at Advance like what you see on shocks of 4x4's and baja trucks. they were like $12. they hold in place with a zip tie.

plum92_camaro is referring to something like this:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ra...FQeKaQod9qIAkA

They are called Rancho 4x4 shock boots; part # RS1952

Hope this helps.

Re: Strut Boot

Yeah, the ones I got were a no name brand. I don't know part #'s, it was two years ago. I simply went into advance and described what I wanted and the showed me a couple options.

Re: Strut Boot

One I bought part # SA1992 and looks similar to 'Rancho' one.

My question is in a scenario when bump is hard, and shaft wants to travel all the way, then these new shock boot, although gets squeezed, will stop the 'strut cylinder body' at 2" mark, simply because that is the length of boot when it is squeezed all the way.

Comparing this to original factory cover where 'strut cylinder body' does travel all the way in and may touch the mounting bottom.

Don't you think this will eventually cause the new shock boot (like rancho or SA1992) to tore apart.

Re: Strut Boot

Old dust cover's internal diameter is like 3" and the strut cylinder shaft is like 2.4". As you see there will be no blocking by the old dust cover. Where as the new shock boot, internal hollow diameter is like barely touching the cylinder shaft in diameter.

I pushed the cylinder all the way in, but boot won't let cylinder travel all the way.

What do you think?

I see what your saying, the cover would probably just deform under the weight of the chassis to allow the strut to compress. Unfortunately I don't think anyone makes original style strut boots for replacements.

I might have my old used ones if you want them?

Edit to ad: FYI If you have aftermarket solid bearing strut mounts then you cant use the factory strut boots. The strut boot wont allow the shaft to fully seat in the bearing, as the boot is too large for the mounts opening.

Re: Strut Boot

New KYB mounts I bought are exactly like factory ones with no differences.

My old were so busted and nuts were frozen so I just threw them out.

How much are you asking for those old dust cover including shipping to 08721, and how do you install the old one to the new mount. A picture would be nice.

Thanks.

Let me go look around for them. If I find them I'll let you know. As long as you pay for shipping you can have them for free. Shipping should be fairly cheap.

I will man, I'm gonna start a build thread sooner or later. I got well over 200 pictures of the swap and I'm not even finished lol.

I looked through my garage and found the old Bilstien rear shock covers; but I haven't found the actual delco strut covers yet. They may be in my storage unit. I'll PM you when I find them.

Re: Strut Boot

Too late, already made one using home depot product and super glue. Cost $10 for a pair. Quality as good as original one.

I also made dual air snorkel pipe (not the can) using home depot material Cost $65. In both cases I am satisfied, and they look as good as original, even better. They are not flimsy and I took into consideration of engine heat, air path.
