Leaking steering pump
Hi Guys,
I just noticed a real bad leak, it seems to be coming from the edge of the case where the cast pump itself fits in.
I think the leak must come from an O ring that surrounds the pump.
It is still in the car, but I would like to know what retains it.
I think it may be the 1" hex that the oil pipe goes to. It that it?

Re: Leaking steering pump
The hex thing you're talking about is the pressure relief valve.
Yes it is one of the things holding the pump in the reservoir.
Should be at least 2 more bolts on the back; one of them should be the stud thing that the one adjustment nut goes onto.
Most likely, the reservoir is bent, from prying on it. Someone probably tightened the belt incorrectly.

Re: Leaking steering pump
If the reservoir mounting surface to the pump isn't badly distorted these pumps are super easy to reseal. I think the seal kit was 5 bucks when I did it, worth it IMHO. Personally I can't justify buying a $40 pump after that.

Re: Leaking steering pump
Thanks for all your replies. If I cant get the seal here I might be able to get a bigger one and splice it. Hope I don't have to take the pulley off.
Anyone tried leak stopper?

Re: Leaking steering pump
I took it off the car this morning and dismantled the pump from the reservoir.
Changed the small O rings from stock, but the larger one seemed softer than the usual Viton O ring stuff so I packed the groove with a few turns of cassette tape and reassembled with the old ring.
The result was a nice dry pump.
Strange bracket where the bolt goes into the water pump, it does not seem to swing from the top bolt that goes into the block. Perhaps they are off different models.
What next?
