Issue with rear upper spring seat

Car is an 87 Formula. I lifted my rear the other day to do new bushings and end links on the sway bar. I had the car on jack stands underneath the subframe causing my rear end to hang down freely. I noticed the passenger side spring was completely loose and wobbly and when I looked underneath it, I noticed that the whole upper spring seat is loose from the body of the car. I looked around and from what I can see there's only one whole in the body. I took the interior apart to see if there was a bolt or anything and I couldn't see anything.

I moved over to the driver side where the upper spring seat is still connected to the body but still can't figure out what's keeping it there. I don't really notice anything wrong back there unless I hit a big bump, then I can feel and hear a knock back in the area of the rear passenger side speaker.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Issue with rear upper spring seat

Sounds like your shock is unbolted. Back behind the rear seat, under the carpet is where the shocks bolt. there will be a foam pad that covers the nut.

Are you talking about the metal coil spring or the shock?

Re: Issue with rear upper spring seat

There's nothing to hold the spring and its insulator in place except the car's weight.

I'm talking about the coil spring, shock is okay.

There's nothing to hold the spring and its insulator in place except the car's weight.

I was also wondering this but I cannot budge the upper spring seat on the driver side. Just seems odd that the seat wouldn't be connected to the body of the car because if you hit a bump or a dip not only would the spring come down with the axle, the upper seat would come with it. Just doesn't seem right.

Right or wrong, if you drop the rear end down far enough the spring and its insulator will nearly fall out. As a consequence swapping rear springs is a thirty minute job—if you stop for a cold one.

Yeah I understand. Oh well, I'm not going to worry about it then. Thank you.
