Re: How do I know if I need variable rate spring

What gets me is the MOOG state "Except Variable Rate" while the AC Delco does not state anything about variable rate, just with or without air....

Re: How do I know if I need variable rate spring

Best combo for these cars is the 5664 or 5662 on the front, and 5665 or CC635 in the rear.

5662/CC635 is a very popular street combo. 5664 is the stiffest one they make that fits these cars on the front. Some people would argue that the 5665 for the rear is "better" for a pure handling-optimized setup but if you ever carry people in your back seat you'll be better off with the CC635.

Expect the car to sit WAY higher than it does now, at least at first, putting ANY of those in there. The old tired sagging stockers are usually so wore-out and worthless that people have been known to put "lowering" springs in, and their car actually raise UP. With new stock-type springs, your car will sit more like it did when it was new.

Go here https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/hist...od-1986-a.html to see what your car will look like with new springs.

Progressive (variable) springs are for dirt bikes.

There, I said it.

Re: How do I know if I need variable rate spring

I went with the MOOG 5665 rear and it gave me the nice firm ride I wanted.
It did raise the rear about an inch at first then settled in at a 1/2in or so.
If there two high you can take out the isolator on top of the spring an replace it with heater hose. That brings it down some.

Just a little tip. If you keep the isolator than line it up with the top of the spring and tape it on. A little electrical tape on each side will really hold them where they should be when you go to put them in.

Re: How do I know if I need variable rate spring

Thanks for the great words of advice everyone. What's weird is I was detailing the engine bay this morning and I noticed the shock tower mounts look brand new, high gloss black, shiny fasteners, so I'm wonder what else has been replaced.....just got her back from the alignment shop and they said most of the parts look new, so now I need to figure out what the "clunk" was when I backed out and turned left. Maybe torque arm bushing?
So the saga continues...
