Re: Manual steering box?

I have never seen a stock manual steering third gen F body, all of the guys I know just swaps in a S10 manual box. It's a perfect fit and feels pretty good. I can't remember the ratio on it right off hand though.

Re: Manual steering box?

Third gens never came with a manual steering box but a manual box from an s-10 is a direct fit. The late model 4 bolt top cover box fits better than the 3 bolt top box. The 3 bolt style needs a few modifications to work but it can still be used. The 4 bolt model is a direct fit.

The pitman arm is slightly longer and will change your turning radius. You can remove it and install the shorter pitman arm from your third gen power box.

Manual steering boxes are not performance ratios. If you need something for fast and easy turns, stay with a power box. The manual box frees up a lot of space under the hood and is more intended for drag race applications for the weight saving.

The S10 manual steering box can only be found on S10's with a 4 cylinder engine but not all 4 cylinder S10 came with manual steering.

Re: Manual steering box?

Is there any kind of a pump pulley that might slow the pump down to get rid of some heat that a road race application creates. Maybe I just need to add more cooler.

cooler would be your best bet there. i did the s10 box swap. it is not a performance ratio by any means, dont think it would be good for the road race track. but it does ok for spirited street driving.

i did it for appearance and just so i dont have to monkey with fixing PS. plus it gives awesome feel and feedback from the road.

Re: Manual steering box?

i'd love to see someone try to roadrace a third gen with a manual box.. back in the way olden days (late 60's), the Z/28 came standard with a tight ratio manual box that was like 3 turns lock to lock... i can only imagine how much fun that was trying to do low speed maneuvers in parking lots and what not, but they also used that same manual box in the actual Trans Am racers of the day with sticky race tires and aggressive alignments.. the arms on the guys that raced those things must have been freakin huge...

Re: Manual steering box?

If you're going to do racing with lots of turns, keep the power steering. The best option is to get a quick ratio power box from something like an IROC or WS6. It has slightly less turns from stop to stop. If you're worried about heat, install a power steering cooler.
