Stronger Suspension questions

I got a 1987 camaro with a 350 swap and was needing some ideas for a stronger suspension as this car is really bouncy and it sometimes smashes the exhaust. Im always lost when it comes to finding the right part if you guys could help and maybe it'll help others as well that'd be much appreciated thanks.

Re: Stronger Suspension questions

What do you mean by "bouncy"? And under what circumstances do you hit the exhaust? And what suspension is under the car now? (V6, V8, aftermarket, etc...)

Examples please. The better you explain the better advise you'll get. Could be as simple as worn out shocks.

It has the original v6 shocks. And what i mean by bouncy is that theres looots of play in it and anytime your speeding and go into a fairly large dip in the road it bounces and hits the exhaust. Theres way to much play in the shocks.

Re: Stronger Suspension questions

Obviously you need shocks. Check pivot points on suspension arms. Go with springs if you want to stiffen the ride some.

You need V8 shocks, and V8 compatible springs. V6 shocks likely won't have enough damping to deal with the increased spring rate and weight of the v8 up front.

You can go with a lowering kit, if you want, or a set of stock MOOG springs for an L98 equipped car.

Moog 5660, 5662, and 5664 have varying spring rates from 650-750lbs and were used on various V8 thirdgens.

Most L98 cars got 5662's which are 748lb/in

Re: Stronger Suspension questions

I'm with the other in regards to shocks sounding like the culprit. I would try an adjustable shock unless you're dead set on non-adjustable bolt-on equipment. An adjustable unit would allow you to tune ride quality to your liking.

Re: Stronger Suspension questions

i ran the stock V6 springs and what i think were the stock struts and shocks for 3 years after swapping a V8 into it, and it wasn't "bouncy".. it did turf out the exhaust a couple of times, but that happens with long tube headers and pipes that hang below the trans crossmember..

now that i've got som Moog IROC replacement springs in the front and rear- still the stock struts in the front, but some DeCarbon 4th gen shocks in the rear- it doesn't bounce at all...

so, yeah, to tie this all up: you need new shocks and struts..
