Power steering help. custom lines
Lots of steering stuff in here, not sure if this fits.
I need to make some custom lines. I've bought adapters to convert the GM style oring fittings to -6an. I need around 120deg-150deg bend on one end and likely a 90 at the steering box end. I'm having trouble finding the large bend fittings. I've been advised that the -an aluminum fittings are not advised for power steering. Does anyone have experience here?
My other option is to cut the hose/pipe I have now and use the factory bend at the pump end and splice it on to a piece of hose to my liking. Easily done if I can get from tubing to either -6an or NPT. Will standard compression fittings hold?
-Sorry, should mention it's an '89 TA, stock PS box, '94 Vette LT1 pump (LT1 swap)

Re: Power steering help. custom lines
Aeroquip and fragolia will have the fittings you need nd properly rated and you may even be able to buy premade hose assemblies too

Re: Power steering help. custom lines
You can also search locally for a hydraulic hose shop that can create custom lines for you as well.
What you will need though are the GM O-ring fittings to -AN6 adapters. This is because GM's fittings are proprietary and most shops will not be able to convert them. But if you provide them a system thats -6an on both sides then they can make custom hoses for you easily.

Re: Power steering help. custom lines
some of the kits sold are over priced avg kit price $160
all the right fittings GM O ring to 6an on box..the lines and the right fittings for the lines will be under $100 and will look better then the Kits.
in the pic I posted ya can only see the diff color of fitting..the lighter blue ones are the Hi pressure fittings.. it shows on the pump body..also diff style..

Re: Power steering help. custom lines
Great pic and good tips but all I can find at Aeroequip and Fragola are 90deg fittings for PS hose. It's easy to find 1500-2000psi rated hose at Summit etc. I have very little experience with -an fittings, how do I know which fittings will take that pressure other than the ones listed specifically for PS pressure? I did call Russell and their advice was not to use aluminum fittings.

Re: Power steering help. custom lines
check ebay..for the best deals on this stuff.
below is line and a fitting for that type of line.. exmpl...
you can get any color ya like
they will always say to use steel fitting on this set up..as its the strongest..alum is safe to use it will never see the stress its made for...for a DD and to make you feel better go with steel if you want to..
example GM will use steel fitting on a EFI set up.. most everybody upgrading will go with alum fuel fitting..
just remember to use the fitting listed for power steering..they are NOT the same as standard AN fittings..
your low presh side is coming off the cooler loop GM adds to the car (under rad) and has a hose clamp on the back of the Power steering pump.. look close at your car..
if you look at the pic I posted of the pump and box..
the fittings on the pump.. top is return. bottom if the presser side..
fitting $13.99
line 6AN (AN stands for army/navy)
$6 a foot
no need to drop $100+
the return line can be standard ss line..
you can get steel fittings as well.

Re: Power steering help. custom lines
Thanks guys, I made another visit to the local hydraulic shop again. This time I left with a piece of hose with a crimped on 90deg and a compression JIC fitting. plan to cut off the steel pipe on the stock line and use the compression to get to JIC and thread it on to the hose. As long as it holds the pressure it will work good. You don't see it and I don't have to try to track down a 150deg fitting.
I appreciate the advice though. I haven't worked with -an fittings much so it's good to know that the aluminum fittings will work as long as they are compatible with the right hose.
Thanks again.
