Rag Joint Eliminator Steering Shaft

Before I go out and buy this, has anyone purchased and installed this specific item? And if so, how do you like it?

Re: Rag Joint Eliminator Steering Shaft

Don't know about that one in particular but I recall this video with steering shaft from an astro van that replaces the rag joint

Re: Rag Joint Eliminator Steering Shaft

Thanks for the reply. I am aware of the Astro van joint. I was inquiring about the specific product I listed above.

Re: Rag Joint Eliminator Steering Shaft

The link you provided doesn't bring you to a specific part, just Ricks Camaro page.

If it is the solid disc to replace the rag joint, I remember people saying that it would bind up the steering.

I personally use the astro shaft from Walter racecraft

Re: Rag Joint Eliminator Steering Shaft

If it is a flexible part it should work but a solid replacement part
will bind up and break parts I know from experience.

Re: Rag Joint Eliminator Steering Shaft

Everyone, myself included, seems to use the astro van shafts. Paid 75 or so and it installed in no time. Unless the thing has magic pixies in it, not sure why I'd consider a $300+ replacement.

Here's the proper link.

NOTE: Their website or TGO breaks the link when forwarded.

It looks like a great new piece of equipment. Me being me, I'd like to know more about it as well. I'm more for new than replacement swaps and such but I myself bought the Astro Van shaft from a guy on here. Can't recall his name but he should still be selling them. Good luck, hopefully someone can chime in.

Re: Rag Joint Eliminator Steering Shaft

People have used the equivalent from flaming river or borgesen. They seem to work fine, personally i think its overkill.I dont see a damper (unless thats it to the right). You want one to isolate vibrations.

I also did the astro van mod, $8 & 12 trouble free yrs so far.

Re: Rag Joint Eliminator Steering Shaft

Well I have been researching the Astro/Safari van mod. Seen almost all the videos. And yes, it seems the best way to go. Just the minor work to get it to work for the F body is what I don't have that much free time to modify it. In one video, it shows the guy having to make a notch at the column coming from the firewall into the engine bay to make the joint bolt fit since the pre-existing bolt hole is no longer used.

Re: Rag Joint Eliminator Steering Shaft

If you use the Astros firewall side u-joint, this is the case.I swapped to a 4th gen piece for this.Which allows you to use the original bolt hole.

Re: Rag Joint Eliminator Steering Shaft

Ok, well that solves that issue. I still have to clock the joint though right? grinding down the shaft so that I can clock it it 90 degrees and then re-weld?

EDIT: Disregard. LOL

Re: Rag Joint Eliminator Steering Shaft

Correct.Make sure your wheels are pointing straight ahead & dont turn the steering wheel once the stock piece is removed. Then clock the u-joints at both ends.

A member here (MC87SS) sells them, if you dont wanna make your own.

Re: Rag Joint Eliminator Steering Shaft

its all about Cosmetics..when you spend $275 on your steering shaft...
spend the money on things that will make it feel better...do it as a set...it makes a Difference.
