Re: 454 TBI on a 305 TBI ????

No, it's not direct. The 454 TBI has a different IAC, a different TPS, no provisions for a TV cable since it probably came off a suburban or truck that had a Turbo 400 tranny, and will require lots of computer tuning to run right.

On top of all that, you don't even need it. Your TBI isn't restricting the engine any unless you have heads/cam and all the supporting mods like tuning, headers, full exhaust, fuel pump, injectors, etc etc etc.

You 100% sure it needs new injectors? Those things are damn near bulletproof. If you need to replace them they are EVERYWHERE and you can probably get some that work fine off a 305 TBI camaro for about 5 bucks a piece. Don't spend $200 on some parts store TBI injectors.

Re: 454 TBI on a 305 TBI ????

the spray is all FUBAR, and the IAC is about junk......

i got enough done to the motor to need a bigger CFM, plus head, intake, and cam are next on the list so im going to need one sooner than later, hopefully i can find a 305TBI thats been modded

Re: 454 TBI on a 305 TBI ????

Go to a JY and rip the injector pod off a 350 truck and take the IAC while your at it, i got a whole TBI from a 350 truck for 25$ when i did my swap from the lil 305 to the 350. There are HUNDREDS of tbi injectors at the Jy's and there are just as many IAC's

Re: 454 TBI on a 305 TBI ????

If you are serious about upgrading your heads, cam, etc DON'T waste your TIME in a dang junkyard. Get yourself flow matched injectors that are appropriate for your hp and cfm.

Since 9/1/08 I have pulled 22 tbi's from junkyards. 14 of them needed the shaft re-bushed. Of the 22 pairs of injectors that I had serviced 8 (4 pairs) of them were bad/leaky and could NOT be repaired. ALL of them needed to be cleaned as many of them were STUCK in the open position. You're wasting your time and money doing the junkyard thing unless you're willing to send that stuff off to be cleaned and repaired, etc.

Once an injector sits for over a month you take a serious chance of it getting stuck. I have literally had hundreds of injectors cleaned and serviced so, I know this from experience.

I am tired of seeing people go the "cheap" route just to get by. In the long run it will ALWAYS cost you more. You have no idea what you're getting when you buy one of the most VITAL components of our setups from a junkyard. I just don't understand that, lol!!!!

A 454 tbi on a stock or even a decently modified 305 is overkill. You'll need to bore your intake to 50mm to match your 454 bores. Some 454 tbi units DO have our exact TPS, but the IAC is different. You can buy the adapter from Turbo City that allows your IAC harness to connect to the 454 IAC.

In fact you can buy the TPS adapter if you get a 454 base with a different tps setup. I've done it several times.

Anyway, do what you feel is best for your budget and time. My advice is clearly stated. This advise is given to you from a ton of experience.

If you're also serious about tuning your own chip (you will have too) then you want the BEST sensors, tbi and injectors you can get. Otherwise, you will beat your head off a brick wall getting her to tune.

Yes, there are a few on TGO that have had some success with junkyard parts and slapping them on their setups, but you stand more than a 60-70% chance that you will have issues...

Re: 454 TBI on a 305 TBI ????

You can grind the linkage off your 305tbi and weld it on the 454. I've done it several times and it works well.

Re: 454 TBI on a 305 TBI ????

Oh another thing to be careful of, is the bottom of the TBI unit. Some of the 454's had a larger base "foot-print" than others. GM changed the channeling from the bores to the IAC to help with idle issues, etc. Some 454 bases use the same style gasket as the 305/350, but obviously 50mm openings. Others use a much larger gasket.

The mounting surface on the intake of a 305/350 is also smaller than the larger foot print 454. So, be careful what 454 you choose or you will have to buy a mounting plate/adapting plate.

Also, another thought... lol!!! Trans-Dapt does make an adapter/spacer that has openings that transition from 50mm down to 44mm (46mm?). Not sure what it transitions to, but it starts out at 50mm, etc. This one only works on the 454tbi units that have the same base foot print that the 305/350 tbi's have.

Have i loaded you up with too much info??? LOL

I have done this a ton of times!

Here are a few pics of my setup. You can see the adapter plate I had made and the 700r4 linkage.

Re: 454 TBI on a 305 TBI ????

Picture 1 is a 305/350 tbi base. Picture 2 is one of the 454 style bases that i mentioned earlier with the larger foot-print. See how the channels are much larger and how each bore has it separate channel?

You can also see that the TPS setup on the shaft will be identical to the 305/350.

Re: 454 TBI on a 305 TBI ????

yea it seems to be enough info

i aint got the time to do all that work to get the 454 one to go, so heck with it, i will just get a 305/350 TBI rebuilt, im not buying junk yard crap for the TBI just for the reasons stated

but may also buy a 454 one and get it going for my set up once im done with the motor

Re: 454 TBI on a 305 TBI ????

Not hi-jacking, but I have a 350 with comps 260h cam, Hooker shorty headers 3" exhaust with no cat. I also have a Holley Pro Jection TBI Intake and Holley 670 throttle body. How would this work on my combo?

Re: 454 TBI on a 305 TBI ????

I have several 454's I am currently setting up for 700r4 tranny. it can be a lot of work to modify everything to make the 454 work. I hope i didn't discourage you. that was not my intention. I was just wanting you to know what the issues are with that conversion.
