TBI:have to use ether to start.

I have an 89 RS 305 TBI that will only start with ether but crank right up when you shoot a little in it and run fine. I can drive it all day but if I cut it off I have to pop the hood and give it some ether. I checked the injectors and I have power to them when I turn the key on. I noticed today that the fuel pump red wire coming from the tank is wrapped around a fuse tip and inserted in the fuse panel to give it power. The fuel pump never cuts off once you turn the key on so I know it should be wired different so it will cut off after it's 2 second pump up. My concern is if this may cause the problem of having to use ether and where in the fuse panel does the red wire coming from the pump supposed to be. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I accidently started this thread in the carb section yesterday and was corrected on it. Thanks for any help!

Get a wiring diagram of the fuel pump circuit try to figure out your mess. There should be a relay powering the fuel pump.

definitely sounds like your fuel pump relay is dead and someone did a quick fix to hot wire the pump to run

ex-x-fire is dead on, get a wiring diagram because it could be the relay or the wiring

I just replaced the relay on mine, $12.99 from pepboys

Thanks a lot ex-x-fire! I will see if I can get one! The one in the Haynes manual looks nothing like mine. I appreciate your response.
