305 tbi Questions

hey guys and thanks for the add, for most part i haven't been able to get an answer from any gm guys about this ordeal and wanted to ask it here since theres more going for the 305 tbi world,,,Question 1, Is the E03 305 tbi any different then the L03 tbi engines the one i have is block coded E03 and is a roller set up used in most big cars ex. carprices and some roadmasters and is suppose to be a 170 hp version roller cam set up...also i was wanting to through in the lt1 cam and yes i read it all in the great write up but was curious to if we needed to change the distributor gear out any due to certain ones being different teethed and such...question # 2 should i buy a set of spare heads and work on them first before i do the swap and should i just keep the same ones tbi style the swirl port heads and just do a good cleaning, port, polishing and new valve springs to support the lt1 cam and new arp head bolts and head gaskets or get a different style heads and do the idea on those instead...i know we have a clearance issue do to the small bore ect but i like my tbi its rebuild new injectors fpr and gaskets ect motor only has 110-115k tops so im not gonna stress to much on the cam bearings being changed unless i see other wise....thanks for reading this and i hope u can shine some light on this tail chasing questions i have been asking for the past 4 months lol

Re: 305 tbi Questions

after further research the E03 are same exact engine as the L03 used on most of the tbi camaros and was not one of the years they changed anything on the distributor gear or anything i just went with a older gentleman i know at a gm dealer was telling and told me just to search a little before i bought a cam due to certain years they changed those so im good next i guess its on to head talk....hope this helps someone else out but I've not seen very many E coded blocks around so maybe it was just a temp thing at the factory or something 87-89 was the only 2 years they where made in

Re: 305 tbi Questions

Most people here will tell you you're an idiot for building a 305. And to an extent they have a point if you're expecting 400hp+.
&lt;br /&gt;<br />
Now with that being said. I have an L03 in my 91. The car is my DD and MIGHT be pushing 225hp with everything I've done so far. As far as your question about heads, YES! Try to get a set of L98 heads or, if you're lucky, factory aluminum heads off a vette. They will provide MUCH better flow. My only regret with my car is that I didn't spend the money on heads and a cam when I just had the motor out for my T56 swap and the suspension work I did. The car is super fun but I can tell that it definitely could put more power out.

I would use the newest ZZ4 heads you can find, almost identical to the factory L98 heads, but every set I have seen had the bowls cleaned up. They flow well, support a decent amount of lift in stock form, have decent springs for a hydraulic roller under 6,500 rpm and work well on a 305 with their 58cc chamber and 1.94/1.50 valve package.
