Rebuilding a carburated 350

I currently own a 91'RS. Right now it has the 3.1V6. I am starting to rebuild a 350 to put in it. The block is currenlty at a machine shop get bored out .030 over. I would like to only spend about $1500 to $2000 on it now. eventually i will be putting more into it. so for now i have to stick with steel heads. But if anyone has suggestions on what kind of heads and what i should have done to them i would appreciate it. Also suggestions on cams, intake and pistons i would greatly appreciate it. Maybe somethings that u have tried that worked and some things that didn't work. So i don't make the same mistakes. Any info would be really helpful.
Thanks,
Theo

P.S. For the cam i was thinking of going with the Comp Extreme Energy series 268 as i want to have a rough idle but i dont want it to cough and spit when im sitting next to the "Ford" at the street light. If u have tried this cam let me know how u like it.

Thanks again,
Theo

you could port your heads or buy a set of modified vortecs for about $600. If you have 2.02 heads porting will get you plenty. otherwise, strongly consider the vortecs.

Cam, an XE-268 works great & will take you to over 400 hp if you work with it.

get cranes stamped steel 1.6 rockers. get you more lift with more consistancy and cost less than roller rockers.

Pistons, go for SpeedPro or Keith Black Hypereutectic pistons. they are stronger than cast and cheaper than forged.

Intake, if you like low-mid range torque get a dual plane. Edelbrock performer RPM is a great intake. and it you have the extra coin and want a few extra hp, get the air gap version.

dont forget your headers and exhaust. do a search to find out what you want here. I am going with hooker 2055s and a hooker cat back system.

with the vortecs you are looking at about $1800, without $1200. But dont forget all the little stuff adds up too.
