I think it's the measurement from the center of the crank journals/main caps to the deck. You know, where the heads sit. That is the deck. I dunno specs on what it is supposed to be though. I'm sure I could find it in one of the 1K books I got though. I let the machine shop check mine and they said it was .015" over. I think GM makes it higher for rebuilding. That way it can be milled. I do know it's important in figuring compression ratios and for checking warpage in the block. I ain't ever done it though.

Anybody know? Well I'm sure you do, but will you tell us?

the "nominal" height is 9.015. But, you can't go by that. You can check it on an assembled motor by using a height mic. One thing that will cause it to be different on an assembled motor is the variation in piston heights and deck warping. Best thing to do is check it a couple of places on each piston and at each end of the block.

If your rebuilding a motor, have your machine shop mock up the motor and parts and cut it for zero deck. Done deal. Zero decking runs about 50 bucks more than a standard deck and well worth it.

You'll find that most stock motors are 9.025" instead of 9.015" on the deck height. Most stock motors have the piston .025 to .035" "in the hole". Zero deck means that you cut the deck such that the tallest piston is right at the top of the bore at TDC. You then rely on the head gasket to give you the room necessary for accomodating for rod stretch and piston rock. Typically you want about .040" between the piston top and the cylinder head.
