Will holley carbs fit under a dual snorkel air cleaner?

I'm looking at scrapping my CCq-jet setup and going with a regular carb/distributor, etc. I still want to use my L69 dual snorkel air cleaner though. I've done a search, and couldn't find anything. I'd like to go with a street avenger, but I'm just starting to look, so I'd be open to other options. I'm also keeping the option open of just getting an old style Qjet and rebuilding it. I don't really want to go with edelbrock. Also, if this would fit, would I be able to fit a Weiand stealth intake and get it all under my stock hood? Thanks for any input.

The fuel bowls of that over-priced gilded thing they call the Street Avenger won't clear the dual snorkel without an airhorn spacer. Same thing with a real Holley. By the time you got the air cleaner raised enough to clear the fuel bowls, the air cleaner would hit the hood.

The Stealth wouldn't be a problem.

Any particular reason you're giving up the benefits of the CC carb? You have to have a pretty serious engine before it can't handle it.

Mine seems to be running very rich, and I can't figure out why. I figured if I switched to non-cc, even if it was still a q-jet, at least I would have a little more control over everything. If you have any pointers, I've got open ears.

Qjet replacement carbs do, but a double pumper style carb will not. I have a Holley like that, and that air cleaner. They dont work together.

Running rich:

1) Weak ignition.
2) Weak O2 sensor.
3) Carb needs adjusting (float level or choke, for instance)
4) Carb needs a rebuild.

If it is the carb, it would be cheaper to buy a parts store rebuilt than it would be to convert to a squarebore carb using new parts.

Did you have to use any kind of spacer for the air cleaner, or did it just clear the choke and all the linkage just by sitting it on there?

The Holley 6210 and its vac. secondary sister will both fit under the L69 air cleaner just fine, because they are Qjet replacement carbs.

A carb like mine (see attached pic) will not fit under an L69 air cleaner, because the fuel bowls stretch out too far and the float adjustment nuts sit too high. They can work if a spacer is used, but then hood clearance becomes a serious problem. I know this because I tried and gave up.

I have a 3310 Holley (again, see pic) and it just wouldn't work with the L69 air cleaner without a spacer, and with a spacer the air cleaner worked fine, but the hood wouldn't close. And my intake, despite how it looks, is maybe an inch taller than the factory aluminum peice. Its lower than most aftermarket hi-perf. intakes.

What kind of spacer allows a dual snorkle air cleaner to fit a Holley like Air_Adams, and how much additional space is needed for the hood to close?

For the first question, http://store.summitracing.com/eprodu...03005&x=19&y=6 . The 3/4" should do it.

For the 2nd question, I'm not completely certain, but at least that much. With a GMPP Q-jet intake, the factory dual snorkel just about rubs the hood blanket on mine, without any spacer. On a 'Bird, it would be even worse.

Thanks for the info 5-7!

Think the 1/2 inch variety might work? Then again, when I had the 305 in it with the action plus intake, it was rubbing on the hood blanket on mine...real close. Now I have a "Crosswind" intake with a Speed Demon and 14x2 open element and 1/2" spacer - but the hood shuts - barely.

But I'd love to be able to use the dual snorkles again. For the price, I think I'll try it!

You know, GM used to make a dual snorkel specifically to fit on top of a Holley, and it was a drop base.

GM used them on 1970-72 Z28 Camaros. These cars came with Holley 4bbls just like the one in my pic a few posts up. They look almost exactly like the L69 air cleaner, but use a 14x3 element and have a chrome lid. The snorkels are slightly smaller, but it still breathes just fine.

Heres some pics:

I'm surprised these air cleaners aren't more popular, to be honest. They breathe great, no restriction at all, but they are a drop base air cleaner thats just as low as an L69 air cleaner. They were also designed by the factory to fit on top of a Holley 4bbl just like the one in my pic a few posts up.

These air cleaners are on Ebay all the time too, usually around $170... steep, but L69 air cleaners aren't much different price-wise.

I'm convinced they do restrict flow. https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=199893

The base you show is nearly identical to the one that came on my '66 Impala 396, except I've had to add the dual and larger snorkels, and it didn't have the PCV tube or Thermovac. However, the basic shape and size is the same as mine. The choke tower was so close to the air cleaner lid that it hurt flow noticeably.

Now that I think about it, I've never tried it w/o the spacer since I put in the Proform main body. That shouldn't be an issue with it. Might just have to try that sometime when I can get data without being limited to needing to use it the same day when I only get the minimum # of TT's.

The spacer may help the carb cool off between rounds, so maybe I'll keep it in there...

So, do both of these work with the 700R4 kickdown, or do you need to buy an aftermarket bracket?

You'll need to modify the throttle arm to get the proper geometry.

Really? Interesting. My dad's '73 Z28 had one of those on it, and he said it was great! He loved that air cleaner. He raved about it enough that I considered getting one not too long ago.

Maybe because he had it ontop of a Qjet it worked better than it did on your Holley? I say this because, just from memory, the Qjet choke horn is quite a bit shorter/smaller around than the one on my Holley. That may have been enough to correct problems caused by the lid?

Would you say that early Z28/396 air cleaner would be better than an open element, dropped-base 14x3 (assuming cold air ducting hooked up similar to L69)?

The "tin hat" portion of the air cleaner may be a little taller than mine as well, the more I look at it. And, the q-jet does sit lower in it than a Holley does.
