aftermarket fog lights illegal?

i was reading on the box of fog lights that they sell at auto zone and pep boys. and it says "for offroad or show use only, check local laws". so im wondering, are these things really illegal? they're the ones that most people intall on their cars. and it says it on like every box, so are these things illegal, or at least in TX? cause i'v seen many people that have installed fog lights aftermarket. anyone know a site where i can look up this stuff or had any experience with the law after installing hallogen fog lights?

I think that the box says it as it actually is. But hey, if you're at inspections, just don't turn them on.

From the manufacture's perspective it may just be a standard disclaimer to avoid law suits.

But the real issues (as they were explained to me long ago) were the type of beam. Fog lights have flat beams that fan out and are not real intense (legal), vs. spot lights have strong tight beams that shine way down the road, like very strong hi-beams (illegal). Another issue is how high there are mounted. Truck guys can't turn on roll bar lights on the highway because they are above the diver and can blind on coming traffic.

I doubt any local law enforcement officers will bother you about fog lights. If you get pulled over just turn em off.

They are illegal in most places. The main reason is that they're not adjustable, and have no particular design orientation, they're just universal add-on trim items; so you stick them on and yeah sure they light up, they also might point directly into the eyes of the drivers of oncoming cars at night (seems like about 95% of the time that's what they do). That's extremely annoying at the least, and unsafe to the point of lethal at worst. I've nearly been the victim of that more times than I care to recall.

You're right you won't generally get pulled over; and you might not even know it if you make somebody lose control on some dark road; but for the sake of all the rest of us, avoid this common act of rudeness.

Properly installed fog lights will go off when the high beams come one. Driving lights are just the opposite. They go off when the low beams come on.
