in my opinion, the zz430 is the better engine, but the ram jet can be made just as powerfull with alot better drivability.

True True, although the ramjet has less initial power I'd still rather pop the hood and show off the RJ than the zz430.

I'm with Zippy; ZZ430 will be the more powerful motor, but the Ram Jet will have better driveability (and most likely gas mileage).

The biggest limitation to the Ram Jet IMO is that you cannot readily re-program the MEFI unit for mods. AS&M can do it, but it isn't cheap.

Personally, I think it would be feasible to adapt the SD 7730 to the Ramjet. Then you could modify the RamJet to your heart's content and reprogram it to get optimal performance.

What would be interesting is how the RamJet would perform on a ZZ430. I believe that is what FormulaJoe is doing and having AS&M reprogram the MEFI.

www.sdpc2000.com is selling a ramjet zz430. Built themselves.

I am close to having it running. Started with a ram jet 350, added LT4 Hot Cam, Fast Burn heads, 30lb SVO injectors, etc. I had AS&M do the re-cal work on the MEFI3 computer. Cost is $350 just to do the re calibration. For $450, the will add an O2 sensor to it so it will have closed loop operation (better gas milage).

I initially chose the Ram Jet 350 over a carbed ZZ430. For one, I dont know jack about carbs. ANother reason is the appearance of the ram jet. You just dont see them around yet. But the main reason is that Torque curve. I mean, the motor is only rated at 350HP, but look at the torque curve. The area under the curve is just awesome. SDPC sent me a dyno graph of it and at 2000 RPM it was already makeing like 375ft/lbs. It peaks at 400ft/lbs around 4500 I think. Peak HP is at 5200 I think.

Then I came across some extra cash and decided to have the best of the two. AKA, Ram Jet 430. I cant wait to fire it up and drive it! It should be fun.

Joe, rather than spend $450, why not look at installing the SD 7730 ECM so you can burn your own eproms? I see no technical reasons why you couldn't go that route.

Glenn, I really want to run a 7730 in the future on that motor. I would like to learn more about all of that stuff first though. I have already coughed up the money to AS&M and they have already done the work (It took the guy no time, I was on the phone with him the whole time he was doing it). As of now, everything SHOULD be (and I stress "should") correct and in tune. I wont know till I start it up and drive it.

After I start driving the 89, I may start getting into the whole PROM burning thing. Im familiar with a lot of the Jargon that goes along with it, I just dont want to get myself in a bind with it. (ie, tuning on it some sunday afternoon and not knowing what the heck is going on and then the thing wont even get me to class monday morning. Plus, i dont know anyone around here that could help me with it) Id hate to get into that!!

I am going to swap over to the 730 ecm with my ramjet project. I will probably try it with the maf setup i have now just to see how it will run. I am still debating on the camshaft. I have a 206-212 .480 .487 Comp Cam in the car now and might just keep that or go with the hot cam and have a zz430 clone. They made some pretty good power with the dinky ramjet cam in the crate motor. I think the duration was like 196 intake 207 exhaust. I bought the fastburn heads and ramjet manifold from gmpartsdirect.com.

FormulaJoe - What headers are you using with the fastburn heads?

I am using the SLP 1 3/4 headers. They have a thick enough flange on them that you can hog them out to match the d-shaped exhaust port on the fast burn heads.

They match up great. By the way, I want to get rid of these headers. They are brand new and I just got them coated inside and out. Comes with Ypipe. I either want to sell them or trade for some super comp long-tubes if anyone is interested.
