Insane, I'm not sure what you mean about your hood being from a V6, but setting the timing is very easy. Just connect timing light to battery, put the lead on the #1 cylinder, which is the first cylinder on the right side of the engine. Disconnect the timing lead on top of the passenger side wheel well, this location is also located in any Haynes or Chilton manual. Start the car up, point the gun at the pulley located at the bottom of your motor, make sure you can read the marks on it. there are prolly better directions on the site. Go to the engine thread. I'm fairly new at this but did this a number of times trying to diagnose what turned out to be a fuel pump issue. Happy timing.

the hood has a v6 sticker so i dont know what the base timing is supposed to be. You answered my question about a jumper so its on the passenger side firewall? my last hot rod had a mechanical HEI with the vac adv removed and was easy to check initial and "all in" on these cars i guess you only check initial after the jumper is unhooked and thats it?

The lead he is talking about is a brown wire that plugs into another brown wire. It is hanging out of the wire harness and is real easy to spot. Be sure to disconnect it or your timing will be WAY off. Me personally I run my 91RS with a 305 at 6* advanced. Be sure to re-time it after tightening the distributor, just to make sure you didnt accidentally bump it. Shut off the car then hook your brown wire back up then you should be good to go.

crap i messed up timing

Ok i think i screwed up i found this pic and it shows the timing tab, i was advancing my digital timing light to 6 degrees advance and then putting the notch on the first peak (see 4 degrees atdc) i thought that first tab was 0
So tommorow i guess i should recheck it.

The wire is actually tan with a black stripe and the spec should be 0 (TDC).

If your TBI motor has swirl port heads (casting number 187 (305), 193 (350)) than the stock setting is 0°. I would not go above 4°. Swirl port heads are fast burn and do not need a lot of initial advance. Going too high will yield undesirable results.

As mentioned, to set the timing,

Unplug EST
Fire car
Set timing
Turn off car
Plug in EST
Grab beer because your done.

There are more detailed instructions located in the stickies at the top of the TBI forum.
