Does my gear drive need a bushing?

Back in 1999, I built a s/b and installed a Pete Jackson 'quiet' gear drive. As I recall, the instructions didn't specify installing a bushing but in retrospect, without one, what's to stop the cam from walking... and wearing a hole through the timing cover? Should I pull it back out?

Just getting around to finally installing the engine.

If I remember right mine came with a little bushing that went in the center of the cam gear. I wouldn't recommend running it without it.

Re: Does my gear drive need a bushing?

is this a roller block or a flat tappet?

if it is a roller block then it will have a thrust plate that should eleminate the need for the thrust botton/the bushing that goes in the center of the cam gear...

now if it is a flat tappet the cams are ground so that the lifters actually push the cam into the block ... i would put one in and shim it to what ever endplay spec you can find for the gear set might be like .005-7 or so
and you may need a new timing cover but i doubt it

It's a flat tappet. Looks like I will be pulling the timing cover.... Oh well, better to do it with the engine out, I guess.
