Ignition Cylinder Replacement
Hi i broke the ignition cylinder in my 1986 Camaro Berlinetta and i cant figure out how to change it out. I already have the cylinder but its a straight column and i just cant find out how to release the old ign cylinder. Does anyone have the diagram showing me how? i would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you, John

Re: Ignition Cylinder Replacement
If it's anything like my tilt columns and you already have the steering wheel and associated parts removed......there should be a torx bit bolt T-20ish that is screwed into the column right below the cylinder. The bolt goes through a slot on the cylinder. Remove the bolt and the cylinder will slide right out.

Re: Ignition Cylinder Replacement
You need an Steering Wheel puller and a Lock Plate Depressor,
Star by removing the bolts and horn button.
Wheel puller installed and pulling.
Steering wheel removed, and the Lock Plate is showing
I built my own Lock Plate Depressor, as shown below:
Remove the locker ring
Lockplate gone. Remove all loose things, and photo to remember how it was assebled
The black bolt is for removing the ignition lock cylinder
You dont have vats so you wouldnt have the wire into the lock cylinder, Just turn the lock cylinder clockwise (i think it was) and remove it, install the newone turning it counterclock wise and insert bolt and then check to see if it turns ok.. if it does assemble everything, if not, adjust the lock cylinder.
You got more pictures from my change of the ignition lock cylinder : http://camaroirocz.net/project/ignitionlock.htm
Its in swedish but you see the pictures, hope this post help you out.

Re: Ignition Cylinder Replacement
Great writeup and pics Theking!
Like he said you will need a steering wheel puller and a lockplate depressor. You can rent those at a local auto parts store like AutoZone or Advance Auto. Just did this about a week ago on a 92 Z. It is pretty straight forward.

Thanks for your feedback, maybe you check my page out : http://irocz.info.se/ and leave some marks in the guestbook, (got it translated if you click the US flag on the right side at the top) Havent translated everything yet, but there is pretty much there on the english part to.
Desmare, then you maybe dont need the lock plate depressor. Just maybe.. remove the steering wheel and see if you got the lock plate there. if not just ride on, if you got, hire the tool

Re: Here are the Pictures of my steering wheel and column
The lockplate could still be behind the steering wheel I didnt see my lockplate until I removed the steering wheel, got pictures on that on the link that I posted earlier
So maybe you need them both, but if you hire them , hire them both then you got the tools at home..

Re: Ignition Cylinder Replacement
ok i know its been awhile but im now having an issue, i replaced the ignition cylinder myself and now the car turns on but doesnt crank over. It was working fine before i spun and broke the old ignition. Could there be some sort of a kill switch preventing me from starting the car?

Re: Ignition Cylinder Replacement
May have improper engagement of the cam/rod that activates the ignition and starter switch deeper in the column. Some more column help is here:

Re: Ignition Cylinder Replacement
To check / change the Ignition Switch you need to lower the steering wheel, you can NOT go that way down to it.
this is how you do it:
STEERING WITH TILT : US105 , STEERING NON TILT : US95
Ignition Switch is located above the steering column
Here you see some thick wires going into it.
Loosen these 2 bolts:
Lower the steering wheel (down below you see the white Ignition Switch:
The Ignition Switch is bolted with 2 STAR bolts:
Take it down and be carefull with the wire, its for the Tranny/neutral switch:
Loosen the wire from the Switch:
Install the new one / align the steel pin for engaging the switch (pin goes from the ignition lock cylinder):
new ignition switch mounted and set to right distance for engagment:

Re: Ignition Cylinder Replacement
The only thing thats different is the bolt locations on the ignition switch.
I think the NON tilt is bolted on the the oposit side , but its the same place so you need to pull down the steering wheel. I have tilt so on the pictures its a tild steering column

Re: Ignition Cylinder Replacement
Couple questions: should you remove the steering wheel to gain better access? Also, are there any tricks to removing the blue wire connectors from the switch? I had the steering wheel down and tried to do this by hand by found it very difficult. I am thinking that removing the wheel will help but the connectors seemed to be fairly stuck in there.
