what are the chances of my engine being any good??
my parents garage burnt down with my 85 z28 in it, the car burnt completely... the engine is a GMPP fast burn 385, i grabbed a ratchet and turned the engine over by hand, i'm wondering what the chances of it being any good are? the oil looks fine and doesn't smell burnt, it turns just like it did before the fire, the aluminum heads and intake are a dark gray color with white spots (oxidation i assume)... i'm guessing that the top end is shot, but maybe my short block is still useable... any input, advice, or similar experiances?

It's likely fine as long as it didn't get hot enough to damage the aluminum pistons. As the previous poster said, best to disassemble it and take a look.

I would completly dis-assemble and clean, check for cracks due to heat, and pretty much refreshen it...depending on how hot it got it might be okay. White spots could be from high heat. don't know. better safe than sorry to take apart......sorry to hear about you loss, what a tradgedy. Wish you and your family the best.....

i think i'm going to start with a leak down test, then pull it apart and start cleaning... if all looks well throw in some new bearings and rings and give it a go... maybe some new valve guides and seats too?
thanks for the advice guys...
