question about rear ends
I have an 86 z28 with the 305, and I believe 2.73 gears (last I checked). Someone in my area is selling a rear end with 3.23 gears and limited slip, with drum brakes (I thought posi rear ends came with discs, but I guess I'm wrong). That rear is out of a v6. Are the rear ends swappable between v6 and v8s?

Re: question about rear ends
Sure they're swappable, and it's plenty strong. But it probably isn't posi. You could get posi with drums in certain models in certain years, but if it's from a V6 car, it's probably not really posi. Either way, it's worth about $75 around here.

Oh goodie, Atilla knows his stuff.
Atilla You're going to be very tired of me very soon, because I've got a TON of questions.

Following is a FAQ about 10-bolts, which you may find interesting. If you swap rears there are matters to consider, including combination valve, parking brake cables and speedo gears:

Re: question about rear ends
Thanks Atilla. You were right. He's insisting that it's not posi, but that it's "limited slip", and says that when he turns one wheel, the other one spins opposite (so it's not posi/limited slip, it's open). In any case I told him thanks and to have a good one.
JamesC, am I reading that faq correctly where it says if different gears are swapped, that the speedo will be inaccurate? If that's correct, then what would need to be done for teh 700r4? The link seems to only have the t5.

Re: question about rear ends
Actually, I did 2 stickies. One is how to figure what you need, the other is the part numbers so you can get what you figured. when people ask me, and give enough info, I often do figure it for them. I hope they're mostly just wanting me to confirm the results of them trying the figuring themselves, but whatever.

Re: question about rear ends
Of course we're not upset, impatient, or whatever, with you. I was typing the same way I talk in live, casual, good-natured conversation with my friends. Looks like JamesC already answered the rest of your latest questions, so you should be all set for now. Post again when you have anything. Peace.
