switch actuator. I forget how it hooks up, I believe there is a small metal piece that goes with it though. The directions will say its a spring but it looks more like a metal clip if I remember correctly. I wish I could remember exactly how it hooks up.

Actually that lil stubborn piece just sits behind the turn signal switch, the dimmer switch actuator as stated above. The curved rod going down to the dimmer switch sits on the curved end (Curved for tilt steering).
Once it is placed there against the steering column should be self explanatory.

Also careful with that cover the only way it will come out is after the 3 retainer screws are removed and the housing is slid forward as seen in the pic. I have broken the first one i came across.
Once the actuator is in place its more of a balancing act to get it all back together without anything falling back out, the trick is grease as you should have found when you pulled it apart, helps hold everything together.

thanks ckelton, that is a huge help...i might need to come back to this cuz i think something might be wrong with the rod that the actuator rests on, it has alot of easy play in it and im not sure if thats normal or if a spring came loose

Thats normal, its just a rod that sits in a little slot on the switch itself. The reason grease helps to keep it stable lol.
If you look under the column you'll see where the rod goes, if the rod did fall out, easy enough to slip back in.

No problem, GM steering columns are bad about coming loose, which makes for a dangerous drive. I replaced my entire steering column in my GTA, luckily I found a good one at the local salvage yard. I know how irritating it can be at times, especially when you have to pull it apart time after time, which is how I've become quite good at it.
Have fun with the diesel

I didn't see where anyone has posted a torque spec for the four eTorx housing support bolts that come loose and cause the floppy column. The factory torque spec is 79inlbs. I'll use my digital torque wrench and baby them up to about 90inlbs. That's after cleaning and drying the threads of the bolt and bolt hole and applying red locktite. Hope this helps someone.
