Edlebrock Performer 60859 heads on sbc 406

Hey what's up. What do you guys think about the 60cc heads on a sbc 400 with flat top pistons ?

60cc chamber means little , only affects your CR when calculated with the other dimensions of your engine ;piston cc , gasket thickness , how far piston is in the block , etc

Of more concern is if the intake runner size ( 175 / 195 / 210 .... ) is big enough to support a 406 which is also a factor of what cam you are running , your intake setup ? and your intended use

I'll speculate and say most on here will say the EDL-60859 heads with their tiny 165cc runner would only be good for a low revving truck engine
A healthy street 383 uses a 195cc or larger head

It will be a street car I have a Air Gap performer intake and lunati 60104 cam. I calculated the CR to be around 11:1. Thanks for the reply

With flattops.... you're well over 11:1 on a 400. Given the "street car" intentions (pump gas) I would look at the bigger 70cc chamber option. That would give you a more reasonable ~10:1 compression ratio.

However, if you really need the 87-up bolt pattern, the heads you are considering are the only option from Edelbrock. If you can deal with the more common 86-down bolt pattern your options open up considerably in the Edelbrock line both in terms of chamber size and runner size.

I made mistake one the last post my compression ratio it 11.5:1 had to dig out my spec book. The engine is already assembled. I was just wondering if anybody ran a similar set up? Thanks for the tips

My experience with high compression 400s on the street is kinda mixed, honestly. Making power is not the problem. Keeping them cool (and out of detonation) in normal driving is more the issue. 3rd gen cooling systems aren't all that great to begin with, under the added load of a big, high compression motor it's possible you can overwhelm them (stock-ish stuff, I'm talking about like the rad and factory fans). Definitely make sure you have the factory "chin spoiler" in place, too, under the rad support or you'll have trouble staying cool on the highway for sure.

Did you ever build the engine? I was wondering how it turned out? Any suggestions for doing it any different? I am thinking about pretty much doing the same. Thanks!
