Cross-Fire Help

I have a 1983 Camaro Z28 with Cross-Fire Injection and was wondering what modifications can be made to increase performance.

The car is completely stock and unmodified which is rare for a third gen Camaro. Instructors at school say that not many mods can be done unless in abandon the Cross-Fire and go with a carb or some other setup. I've heard that with proper tuning, these engines can perform quite well.

I have already purchased the Renegade manifold and was looking for some advice on selecting heads and a cam. I was told that the ECM is not going to like the heads being changed or a cam swap. I was thinking if I stay very conservative with the heads and cam I should be alright.

Any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks!

Alec

Welcome to TGO!!

Any plans for exhaust? the crossfire (and all stock exhaust) systems were very restrictive.

Re: Cross-Fire Help

I did want to replace the exhaust as well. Along with the mods I wanted to do, I want to go with a set of short headers and a Flowmaster cat back exaust system.

Do you know what my stock cylinder heads intake runners cc at? I was thinking going to a set of heads from Aerohead Racing Components. The have a set of reconditioned factory casting with 165cc intake runners for $400 fully assembled. I was think this would have to be an upgrade from what I have now. I was going to port them at school.

What do you think?

Hm, to be honest I'm not sure what the stock crossfire heads #'s were.

Re: Cross-Fire Help

Once all the modifications are completed, can't you just have a new chip burned for ecm to accept all changes? And if you like your Crossfire and give it the care it needs, doesn't matter what others say.

Re: Cross-Fire Help

Any update on your crossfire? I have one in a trans am, and if I could increase performance and still pass smog, I am interested in the HP gains you found!

I ran the comp cams 218in 224ex with 462/469 lift with dynamic crossfire prom and ran real nice no issues with the ecu.

Re: Cross-Fire Help

How was the driveability, idle quality...any more specs on that cam, operating range, lobe separation angle...not sure of the specs on the stock cam were? What other mods did you do?

Thanks

idle quality was great, it idled at 650. it takes a lot of fine tuning. Of coarse it needed some tuning like synchronizing the tbi"s , getting the correct volts for the tps, and fuel pressure. mine was on a 355 with corvette 350 injectors, 10:1 comp, Edelbrock 185cc aluminum heads, and a ported crossfire intake.

Re: Cross-Fire Help

BTW - kind of a late post - but your car should have 416 head castings. I believe they are the same as on the L69 engine. You can put a nice set of heads on there as long as you are careful with your cam selection. You can't go crazy with duration, as it will not run right with the CFI system.

Re: Cross-Fire Help

I've also got a Crossfire in OEM shape. Unmolestered! I've been looking all over these threads. Everyone says there's tuning info but I can't find any I wonder if basic TBI procedures apply to the crossfire. Minimum air, TPS, IAC, etc

Re: Cross-Fire Help

First mods:

3" catback
Shorty headers (Or long-tubes if you really want if you have a manual)
Cam
Heads
Poly bushing
New springs
New shocks

This will tighten the car up and make it run nice. Just the exhaust alone will net you noticeable horsepower that you'll feel and the suspension will make it "feel" faster, and improve ride and cornering to boot!
