first engine build

A few weeks ago I picked up a 91 350 from a g20 for $150. It's a 4 bolt mains 880 block and has about 150k miles. I took the heads off today and there was a little water or antifreeze that's gotten in the cylinders but it doesn't look too bad. If I dissemble it myself and have a machine shop clean it up how much should I expect to pay? I've never built an engine before so how realistic would it be for me to try and put it back together myself? I'm trying to do a budget build and all the shops I've called want anywhere from 1500 to 2k to rebuild it but with all new parts. For a mild build with vortec heads and maybe a lt1 or lt4 cam would I be able to use any of the stock internals?

Re: first engine build

for a mild build the stock crank and rods are fine. if the block needs to be bored you'll need pistons.

Re: first engine build

Is it necessary to have the crank and rods checked for cracks?

it's necessary to get them checked for being out of round.

Re: first engine build

Take what you have a part, take the block, rods/pistons and crank to a good machine shop and ask them to look it over and tell you if it needs to be bored or what not. Tell them this is your 1st rebuild, etc.

Most times a good shop will look it over for free, and tell you what must be done and what over size bearings and pistons you will need.

Northern auto parts has the best prices on full master rebuild kits.

Common machine work and prices (in my area)
Hot tank clean block $50-65
Bore and hone block $100-140
take pistons off rods, put new pistons on rods $55-70
Install your new cam bearings in block $15-20
Install your new freeze plugs into block $15-20
Polish crank journals $50-65
Turn crank journals $75-115
Magnaflux block for cracks $75-100
Magnaflux heads for cracks $40-60

Re: first engine build

Just got a quote from a local shop of $175 to have my block prepped for rebuild. This is for honing and glazing. How common is it for the block to need to be over bored? I'm hoping my crank and rods are reusable. I've got 062 vortec heads and an edelbrock performer vortec intake and will be using my quadrajet. Haven't decided on cam although from what I've read the lt1 cam is recommended. Always open for input as far as where to get parts or suggestions.
