Oil Pressure too high? Hmmmmm...

Hello to all!!!

I have a 92 RS with a 305 and according to the spedo it has 149K miles. Just got it on the road and I don't have a lot of history on it... Clearly it was abused as a child but appears to be in reasonably good condition. Runs strong only thing I've noticed is that at about 70 ~ 75 mph in 5th gear it look to like it has upward of 65 ~ 70 # of oil pressure and on occasion the gauge will drop 5 or so pounds then recover immediately? I am using synthetic 5w30 as is call for in the manual... Oil pressure seems a bit high to me and I don't completely understand the fluctuation.

Any ideas? Oil Pump? Oil Pick-Up? New Crate Motor?

Looking for your input...

Merry Christmas to all...

Thanks,
Ron

Re: Oil Pressure too high? Hmmmmm...

The fluctuation I don't know but my neighbors Camaro has high oil pressure due to tight bearings when he assembled the car. I would not worry about high oil pressure. Either you have good bearings or some one installed a high pressure pump.

Re: Oil Pressure too high? Hmmmmm...

Ron,

My car acts the exact same way. On the highway my oil pressure is pegged. It used to max out at 60 but it seems higher now. When I am at low speeds and go to idle the engine will stumble at times and the pressure will dip to 5-10 but recover. The time is so short it should not be an issue.

Re: Oil Pressure too high? Hmmmmm...

It is probably a gauge or a sending unit issue.

To be certain you could

1) put a manual gauge on it and see what it reads.

2) replace the sender and see what happens

3) just live with it

Re: Oil Pressure too high? Hmmmmm...

As you suggest, I'll install another oil gauge to double check. If there is a problem I would like to see if I can isolate the issue.

Thanks all for the input...

I'll report back when I have some additional information....

Merry Christmas to All!!!!

Re: Oil Pressure too high? Hmmmmm...

I believe the problem may have fixed itself. Hmmmmm

Took the car out today and immediately the oil pressure was back up to 80. Drove carefully for a few miles and noticed the pressure was fluctuating. Continued driving and the pressure dropped to where it would be expected under normal operating condition, in the normal range, 30 ~ 40 up to 50 ~ 60 depending on RPM.

Although I've not taken anything apart or tested anything as of yet, I believe the problem may have been with the oil relief valve. It may have been clogged or stuck in the close position causing the oil pressure to be high. As I said, I don't know for certain, but suspect this may have been the culprit.

Next week I'll be flushing the system and testing the pressure with an external digital gauge. But for the moment everything looks good...

Thanks to all...

Ron

Re: Oil Pressure too high? Hmmmmm...

You're not saying the oil pressure is high before the oil is completely warmed up are you? High oil pressure at startup and the first several mins is completely normal. Depending on weather it can take 10 mins of driving to get the oil up to operating temp and just because coolant is up to temp does not mean oil temp is.

Re: Oil Pressure too high? Hmmmmm...

Tibo,

Yes the oil pressure will stay high after running perhaps 45 minutes to well over an hour. Ambient temperature here in AZ is in the 40's ~ 70's depending. So I don't think that is any real issue. The oil pressure gauge in the dash appears erratic not sure why. Never drops into the danger low pressure zone but jumps. After the holidays I'll put a digital oil pressure gauge on it and see what happens.

Merry Christmas to ALL!!!!!
