'85 IROC Ignition Switch Locked Up
I had a TCI 700R4 tranny installed in my 85IROC 305TPI a while back. The last few times I started it, I had trouble returning the key to the off position. Now the ignition switch will not rotate with the key inserted. Oddly enough I can pull the gear selector out of Park with out the key inserted. Does anyone know if there's a cable running from the gear selector to the ignition switch as part of the ignition safety interlock system?? I'm thinking this is the problem I'm experiencing. Thank you...Joe

There are two cables hooked to the shifter in the console. One is the shift cable, the other is the shift lockout. It performs two functions. prevents the ignition from being turned to the lock position while in gear, and prevents the shifter from shifting out of park when the ignition is in lock position. There is a white ( most likely yellow with age now) end to the cable screwed to the ignition switch mechanism on the left side of steering column. I'd be looking in the console to make sure the cable isn't disconnected or impeded from moving as it should. Possibly lube the cable and lockout mech, make sure the cable end is mounted to the ign switch. Also make sure the shifter is going all the way into park. May be a bad adjustment on the trans end stopping it from doing so. Push the shifter all the way forward and try to turn the key to lock.
