need NSS help

I have an 88 iroc, no vats and the car starts fine. After driving it won't start till an hour or so. I put a test light on the NSS yellow wire and the purple wire going to the starter and I have power. I test it at the starter and no power, my understanding is the wire is straight to the starter. Is there a relay between the two or something I'm missing? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: need NSS help

There's a starter solenoid between there. I think they are all behind the D/S kick panel. I maybe wrong about location so you may have to trace he wires... http://austinthirdgen.org/mkportal/m..._continued.gif

Re: need NSS help

the starter solenoid is attached to the starter, your solenoid is probably worn out / overheating

Looking at the wiring diagram for 1988 , you will see that there is no relay under the driver's side kick panel since the car has no VATS . (That relay is so that the VATS can kill the starter if the wrong key or screwdriver is used to try to start the car) .

Now since you have no relay , and are sure you have +12V on the purple wire coming from the NSS , but not at the starter , there are really only two possibilities .

#1 ; That there is the remnants of an old alarm system tucked away hidden under the dash someplace , and it's inhibiting your start signal from getting to the starter ,

Or ,

#2 ; That the body connector next to the brake booster that carries the wires to and from the dash , has developed a corroded , sometimes making and sometimes not , connection that is inhibiting the +12 from getting from the NSS to the starter . If there is no old alarm , and your sure of that 100% , I'd be checking that body connector and see what ya come up with there .....

Re: need NSS help

OK I double checked and there is 12 v, drove the car for about 30 min and it won't start back, rechecked and the wire at the starter is dead. I'll check the body connector. Is something I can get to under the hood or should I go under the dash. I got the car new so no alarm has ever been on it... And thanks for the replys, these wires is becoming a headache
