sbc 383 timing question

hey guys I bought a used 383 that was built by a speed shop it runs good but I just wanted to check my timing and see where it was at and on my dial back timing light it was 0 initial and 20 full mechanical. it has an aftermarket timing cover and tab. I found it odd figured it should be around 36* full in. it just has the pointer style timing tab. Reason I checked because it kinda has a slight buck at low cruising speeds at a steady rpm and wanted to see if the timing got bumped on install. Any feed back would be appreciated.

Re: sbc 383 timing question

The total advance should be 32-34 degrees at 3500 rpm and I believe 10 degrees at idle, vacuume disconected from distributor.

Re: sbc 383 timing question

if it was me and i was getting 20 degrees of advance i would bump the initial to around fourteen to sixteen so the total was 34 to 36 which is about what most sbc street motors will like but there is no way to know an exact number see what it likes every motor is different but i know 0 initial is not right and most 383's wont even run at that
