Re: Idle and acceleration issues

It's nothing major, just a tuning prob.

What fuel pump are you running? Check your fuel pressure. Needs 5 to 5.5 psi for the edelbrock carb.

The 1406 is tuned lean out of the box. Buy one of the carb re cal kits for it which comes with a bunch of metering rods, springs, jets.

Timing you are gonna want something like 14-16* btdc at idle with vac advance line un hooked, and 32-36* total all in by 3000-3200 rpm. Hook vac advance to front driver side small port (full vac) on the carb.

Take the idle mixture screws all the way out and blow in the holes with compressed air or can carb cleaner.

Put a vac gauge on engine (drive side front port of carb) and adjust each idle mixture screw turning it to get the highest vac reading you can.

Make sure your choke is adjusted right and is closing when engine is cold and opening up as engine warms up, and staying fully opened once warmed up

Move the accel pump link/arm to the top hole to give more of a pump shot.

Once you get your idle down, put vac gauge on it again and note the reading, pick a step up spring that's 1/2 of your reading.

Look at your tuning chart in back of owners manual for the carb and pick out metering rods that's about 2 steps richer in both cruise and power mode

Re: Idle and acceleration issues

Ok thanks I will try that,as for my pump its a edelbrock mechanical pump performer rpm 1721 it's 6psi supposedly burin haven't put a gauge on it And my vacuum advance is locked out on my distributor.
When I set my timing to 34* at 3000rpm and then check it at idle it says it's 34* advanced still is that right ? And I will grab a carb tune kit try the other stuff thanks again

Re: Idle and acceleration issues

Yeah with locked out timing that would be correct. Total will be the same through out it's range. This is also one reason you can't get your idle to lower. Advancing the timing also rises idle speed.

I don't like using locked out timing on any type of milder street style engines with less that 245* @ .050" cams. Once you get over 245@.050" the engine will want and need a higher idle speed anyway so that does not become a prob.

I have a 249/252@.050 cam in mine and it will not idle less than 1,000 rpm at all. Even with this engine I still use mech. and vac advance

Re: Idle and acceleration issues

I figured out my idle I had my autometer tach set on 4 cylinder mode haha now I re timed it and idle is good top end is good but when I switch gears and get on the throttle again it stumbles at first I got a vacuum gauge now and a carb calibration kit I will try those
